Basic Information On Symbicort
Symbicort is used to prevent bronchospasm in people with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is a combination of a bronchodilator (formoterol) and a steroid (budesonide). Steroid treats inflammation in the body while bronchodilator improves breathing by relaxing the muscles of the airway in the lungs. It is also used in the treatment of chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The Symbicort drug is meant for asthmatic adults and children above 6 years of age whose asthma could not be controlled by an inhaled corticosteroid and a long-acting beta 2- agonist. However, this medication does not treat acute symptoms and cannot be used as a rescue medication. Therapy with Symbicort should be gradually reduced once asthma control has been achieved.
Precautions / Side Effects Of Symbicort
The active chemical ingredients of Symbicort are Budesonide and Formoterol. It is a long acting beta2 agonist and should be used only when asthma is severe enough and is uncontrolled by other medicines like inhaled corticosteroid. You should take only the prescribed amount of drug. Do not change the medication dosage or schedule. Brand or generic Symbicort can increase the possibility of asthma related death. It must not be used by patients under 12 years of age. Using this medication in small children can retard their growth.
Before using brand or generic Symbicort, make sure to inform your doctor if you have diabetes, epilepsy, thyroid disorder, any active infection, heart disease or high blood pressure. You would need a dose adjustment in such cases. As Budesonide/Formoterol is a steroid, it can cause side effects like delayed wound healing, susceptibility to infections like measles and chicken pox, and immune suppression. Pregnant and breast-feeding women should not take Symbicort without doctor’s consultation.
Symbicort Dosage
The recommended starting Symbicort dosage for adults and adolescents over 12 years of age depends on patients' asthma severity. It is administered twice daily, and the inhalations are taken 12 hours apart. It should be inhaled orally. After inhalation, you should rinse your mouth with water without swallowing. You should not use other long-acting beta2-agonists while using Symbicort. Inhalations should be limited to two a day, as more frequent inhalations can cause adverse side effects. A short acting beta2 agonist should be taken for instant relief if asthma symptoms are experienced in the period between the doses. The maximum recommended Symbicort dosage is 160/4.5 mg twice daily.
