Description of Nuvaring
Nuvaring is a prescription drug which comes in the form of a vaginal ring consisting of two female hormones, etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol. These hormones work by preventing ovulation, the process which occurs within a female body when an egg is released from the ovary. The hormones also change the structure of the cervical mucus and lining of the uterus. These changes limit the sperm’s ability to reach the uterus. A fertilized egg’s attachment to the uterus is also rendered difficult.
Indications & Dosage of Nuvaring
Nuvaring is indicated as a contraceptive medication mainly intended to prevent pregnancy.
The doctor’s prescription should be strictly followed by patients using Nuvaring. Doing otherwise may result in health problems. The ring should (usually) be inserted on the first day of the menstrual cycle. The first vaginal ring post-insertion should remain in place for a period of 3 weeks. It is recommended to take out the ring approximately at the same time as it was inserted after the 3 week period. The next ring should be inserted after another full week. This pattern has to be followed to make the treatment effective.
Patients who buy Nuvaring should not expect it to work only if it is used during intercourse. Before reinsertion of the ring, it should be properly washed. Several physical examinations may be needed during the period of Nuvaring usage. As such, appointments should not be skipped. Lastly, Nuvaring should be stored at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.
