Description of Mucomyst
The generic name of Mucomyst is Acetylcysteine. This drug is a potent mucolytic, name given to a class of drugs that dissolve mucus. Mucomyst is available through a prescription only, in the form of ampoules. Each ampoule contains 5 ml of Mucomyst.
The nonmedical ingredients used in the preparation include sodium hydroxide and disodium ethylenodiamine tetra acetate dihydrate.
Indications & Dosage of Mucomyst
Mucomyst is prescribed to patients with thick or abnormal mucus formation in conditions like:
- Bronchitis, chronic emphysema, bronchiectasis, tuberculosis, chronic asthmatic bronchitis, and any other chronic bronchopulmonary disease
- Pneumonia, tracheobronchitis, and any other acute bronchopulmonary disease
- Other lung problems associated with presence of abnormal or thick mucus in the airways
In addition to the above, Mucomyst may also be used during tracheostomy care, anesthesia, and before certain types of lung tests.
You may use Mucomyst either undiluted or dilute it with an equal amount of sterile water or sterile normal saline. Usually, the recommended dosage is Mucomyst 3-5 ml undiluted or Mucomyst 5-10 ml 3-4 times each day.
Mucomyst is inhaled from a face mask, tent, mouth piece, IPPB (intermittent positive pressure breathing) machine, or nebulizer. The drug may be administered in a hospital setting or at home.
At home you will need to inhale the drug through a nebulizer. It is necessary that you understand the procedure of using a nebulizer correctly and completely before self administering Mucomyst at home.
For optimal results, it is necessary that you take Mucomyst exactly as directed by your doctor and for the full prescribed period. You should store the drug at room temperature below 25°-30°C.
Side Effects & Interactions of Mucomyst
Common side effects associated with Mucomyst include the following:
- Runny nose
- Drowsiness
- Sore mouth
- Clamminess
- Nausea or vomiting
Usually, the aforementioned side effects are mild. However, if they become a cause for concern, you should consult your healthcare provider.
Speak to your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects during treatment:
- Difficulty breathing, wheezing, or coughing
- Chest tightness
