Description of Mestinon SR
Mestinon SR has Pyridostigmine as its active ingredient, and it belongs to the therapeutic category of muscle stimulants or antimyasthenic medicines. You can buy Mestinon SR in the form of oral tablets, containing Pyridostigmine Bromide 180mg. The tablets also contain tribasic calcium phosphate, silica gel, magnesium stearate, corn-derived proteins and carnauba wax. Indications & Dosage of Mestinon SR
Mestinon SR is used for treating symptoms of myasthenia gravis. It is also recommended to military people who are exposed to nerve gas. The drug works by preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine in the patient’s body that is responsible for causing difficulty moving muscles. Acetylcholine is a chemical in responsible for building communication between muscle movement and nerve impulses.
Your doctor may advise you to take one to three Mestinon SR 180mg tablets one or two times a day. However, the dosage may vary depending on the severity of your condition and your response to treatment. Since these are sustained release tablets, their effects last longer than regular tablets, but they start working a little slower than the latter.
Side Effects & Interactions of Mestinon SR
Patients using Mestinon SR tablets can commonly experience skin paleness, cold sweats, increased urination, stomach upset, mild nausea, watery eyes, vomiting, tingling or warmth, mild itching or rash. These are short lived side effects of the drug and can be easily managed with or without medical help. However, inform your doctor at once if any of these become too troublesome. Also seek medical attention if you develop any serious side effects of the drug. Such side effects include:
- Muscle twitching, extreme muscle weakness
- Severe diarrhea or vomiting
- Vision problems, slurred speech
- Confusion, panic attacks, anxiety
- Cough with mucus

Before starting treatment with Mestinon SR, inform your doctor if you are already using any of the following medicines:
- Aminoglycoside antibiotics (e.g. gentamicin)
- Beta blockers (e.g. propranolol)
- Anticholinesterase eye drugs (e.g. physostigmine)
- Antiarrhythmic medicines (e.g. quinidine)
- Narcotic pain relievers (e.g. codeine)
- Urinary or bladder medicines (e.g. flavoxate)
- Bronchodilators (e.g. tiotropium)
- Antihistamines (e.g. doxylamine)
- Irritable bowel drugs (e.g. dicyclomine)
- Steroids (e.g. betamethasone)
- Drugs for treating Alzheimer’s (e.g. rivastigmine)
In addition to these, you should inform your doctor beforehand about all the other drugs you are using at present, including health supplements and herbal products.
Warnings & Precautions of Mestinon SR
