Description of Kayexalate
Kayexalate has Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate as its active ingredient, and it belongs to the category of antidotes, deterrents or toxicological agents. You can buy Kayexalate in the form of a rectal enema or as an oral solution. It is a diethenyl polymer, benzene, with sulfonated, ethinyl benzene and sodium salt as its other ingredients.
Indications & Dosage of Kayexalate
Kayexalate is used for reducing high potassium levels in patients suffering from hyperkalemia. The medicine works by affecting the exchange of sodium and potassium in your body, which helps get rid of extra potassium from your blood.
If you are using the oral suspension form of Kayexalate, you will be advised to take Kayexalate 15gm per day, divided into two to four doses. Each gram of the drug contains 4.1mEq of sodium. If you are using it in an enema, you will be given Kayexalate 30 to 50gm every 6 hours.
In order to ensure that the drug helps your condition, your doctor will need to take your blood tests regularly. Therefore, do not miss any scheduled appointments with your doctor.
Side Effects & Interactions of Kayexalate
Kayexalate patients may commonly experience diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, stomach upset or constipation. These are short-lived side effects of the drug and subside on their own as your body becomes tolerant to it. However, inform your doctor without fail if any of these persist or worsen. Seek medical attention immediately if you develop any serious side effects of the drug. Such side effects include:
- Fluttering or pain in the chest
- Severe muscle weakness
- Black, tarry or bloody stools
- Increased urination or thirst
- Pain in rectum or lower stomach
- Inability to move muscles
- Rapid weight gain
- Irritability, confusion
- Uneven heartbeat
- Swelling
Contact your doctor if any of these symptoms persist even after discontinuing the drug.
Some of the drugs that may interact with Kayexalate adversely include diuretics (such as triamterene or spironolactone), or drugs such as lithium, thyroxin or digoxin. Also do not take salt substitutes or potassium or calcium supplements during treatment with Kayexalate. Also do not take any antacids or laxatives without consulting your doctor.
Warnings & Precautions of Kayexalate
Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Kayexalate if you have an allergy to any of the ingredients of the drug, or if you have a bowel obstruction. Special tests and dosage adjustments will be required if you have any of the following medical conditions:
- Heart disease
- Congestive heart failure
- Edema
- High blood pressure
- Constipation
- Kidney disease
- If you are on a low-salt diet
In some cases, your blood potassium levels may dip with Kayexalate treatment. Symptoms of such a condition include confusion, irritability, pain or fluttering in the chest, uneven heartbeat, breathing problem, severe muscle weakness, or problem moving the muscles.
Kayexalate is not meant to be used by pregnant women, as it may harm the unborn child.
