Description of Janumet
Janumet is an oral medicine for diabetes. It contains metformin and sitaglipitin and helps control sugar levels in the patient’s blood. This drug is used along with exercise and diet to lower blood sugar in adult patients with Type 2 diabetes. Metformin and Sitagliptin is the generic name of this drug.
This medication lowers glucose production in the liver and reduces glucose absorption by the intestines. It is available in the following strengths- Janumet 50 mg/500mg and Janumet 50 mg/1000mg tablets. The other inactive ingredients include polyvinylpyrrolidone, sodium lauryl sulfate sodium stearyl fumarate and microcrystalline cellulose. The film coating contains talc, polyethylene glycol, polyvinyl alcohol, red and black iron oxide and titanium oxide.
Indications & amp; Dosage of Janumet
Janumet is indicated as an adjunct to exercise and diet to improve control of glycemic sugar in adult patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is not to be used by adult patients with Type 1 diabetes or those undergoing diabetic ketoacidosis treatment.
The recommended dose is Janumet 50/500mg twice a day with meals with gradual escalation to Janumet 50/1000mg twice a day with meals. However, for a patient who is taking metformin 850mg twice a day, the recommended initial dose is Janumet 50/1000mg twice a day.
Patients treated with Janumet and an insulin secretagogue or insulin are to be given a lower dose of the insulin secretagogue or insulin to minimize risk of hypoglycemia. Patients under Janumet therapy may develop lactic acidosis. Early symptoms may worsen and sometimes prove fatal if not treated on time. These symptoms include irregular heartbeat, stomach pain, trouble breathing, dizziness, weakness, nausea with vomiting, and numb feeling in the arms and legs.
Side Effects & amp; Interactions of Janumet

- Cold symptoms such as runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, sneezing
A patient should immediately consult a doctor if he or she exhibits the following severe side effects-
- Hives
- Swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue
- Pancreatitis – severe pain in the patient’s upper stomach spreading to the back
- Breathlessness
- Swelling or rapid weight gain
You should not buy Janumet online if you previously suffered an allergy to either sitagliptin or metformin, if you have liver disease, if you are in a diabetic ketoacidosis state or if you suffer from a kidney disease. Such patients may develop lactic acidosis which is a life-threatening condition. Pregnant women and nursing mothers should take this drug only with a prescription from the doctor.
Warnings & amp; Precautions of Janumet
There are many drugs that can interact with Janumet. Drugs such as isoniazid, diuretics, heart medications, phenothiazines, birth control pills, seizure medicines, and diet pills can lead to hyperglycemia or high blood pressure when taken with Janumet, and drugs such as probenecid, some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, sulfa drugs, and other oral diabetic medications like acarbose and miglitol can lead to hypoglycemia or low blood sugar when taken with Janumet.
