General Information on Flagyl Vaginal Gel
Flagyl Vaginal Gel is used for treating certain vaginal infections in women such as bacterial vaginosis. Its generic name is Metronidazole Vaginal, and it belongs to the category of topical antibiotics.
Flagyl Vaginal Gel is available in the form of a topical gel that needs to be applied directly into the vagina. It kills the bacteria inside the vagina and prevents their growth.
Flagyl Vaginal Gel is used only for treating bacterial infections in the vagina and is ineffective against yeast or fungal infections.
Side effects of Flagyl Vaginal Gel
If you are suffering from other medical conditions, the effectiveness of Flagyl Vaginal Gel may get hampered. Therefore, do not buy Flagyl Vaginal Gel if you are suffering from aseptic meningitis, encephalopathy, leucopenia, optic neuropathy, peripheral neuropathy, seizures, epilepsy, or liver disease. Inform your doctor beforehand if you are suffering from any of these medical conditions. He or she may need to conduct special tests or make some dosage adjustments depending on your medical condition.
Alcohol intake during Flagyl Vaginal Gel may cause redness or flushing of the face, vomiting, headache, nausea, or stomach pain. Apart from avoiding alcoholic beverages, you should also avoid taking drugs that contain alcohol, such as cough syrups, elixirs, and tonics.
After applying Flagyl Vaginal Gel, you may commonly experience vaginal itchiness, pain during intercourse, or a white or thick vaginal discharge with no/mild odor. You may also experience stomach or abdominal pain or cramping, burning, stinging, or pain while urinating, or redness or itching in the genital area. Your sexual partner may also experience irritation or burning on his penis. These are temporary side effects of the drug and subside as your body adjusts to the medicine. However, inform your doctor if any of these worsen or persist.
Less common side effects of Flagyl Vaginal Gel include dizziness, lightheadedness, diarrhea, dryness of the mouth, furry tongue, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, or a metallic taste in the mouth. Inform your doctor at once if you develop any of these symptoms.
Do not buy Flagyl Vaginal Gel if you have an allergy to Metronidazole. Watch out for symptoms of an allergic reaction such as hives, severe dizziness, swelling or itching of the face, tongue, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing. Seek immediate medical help if you witness any of these symptoms.
Dosage of Flagyl Vaginal Gel
Your doctor may advise you to apply Flagyl Vaginal Gel in your vagina once a day, usually at bedtime.
Before using the drug, do not forget to wash your hands with soap and water, as contamination may lead to a new infection in the vagina.
Flagyl Vaginal Gel comes with an applicator, which you can use to apply the gel in your vagina. The drug must be used for the full period of the prescription, even if the symptoms of the infection diminish before the treatment course.
Avoid getting Flagyl Vaginal Gel into your nose, mouth, eyes, or ears, as severe irritation may occur. If this happens, wash the area thoroughly with running water. If irritation persists, seek medical help immediately.
