Description of Durezol
Durezol is an ophthalmic corticosteroid. It has anti-inflammatory effects and relieves pain related to inflammations. Besides containing 0.05% difluprednate as the active ingredient, each 5ml of Durezol solution has the following inactive ingredients: castor oil, polysorbate 80, glycerin, purified water, sodium acetate, boric acid and sodium EDTA.
Patients can buy Durezol only as per a doctor’s prescription. The generic name of this drug is Difluprednate Ophthalmic.
Durezol is strictly meant only for topical administration.
Indications & Dosage of Durezol
Durezol is indicated to treat inflammation and pain caused due to ocular surgery.
Treatment with Durezol should start immediately after 24 hours have lapsed from the time of the surgery. The usual recommended dosage is one drop four times a daily for a continuous period of 2 weeks. After that, the dosage is reduced to one drop twice per day for 7 days, after which the medicine is gradually withdrawn.
The solution is instilled in the conjunctival sac of the eye that has undergone surgery.
Patients who buy Durezol should keep in mind the following important points relating to the administration of the drug:
- A contaminated solution can cause permanent vision impairment or total vision loss. It is essential to prevent the tip of the bottle from touching any unclean surface. Care should be taken while administering the medicine in the eyes so that the tip does not touch the eyes or the hands.
- If symptoms do not improve within the first two days of treatment, patients should inform their doctor.
- Patients who wear contact lenses should wait at least 15 minutes before wearing their lenses after administering Durezol.
- Patients should never stop using Durezol without consulting the doctor.

Side Effects & Interactions of Durezol
Patients using Durezol may experience some mild side effects of this drug in the initial stages of treatment. - Irritation in the eye
- Itching
- Redness of the eye
- Watering of the eyes
- Increased sensitivity to light
Not every patient will be affected adversely by this drug. However, some individuals may develop serious side effects of Durezol. They are potentially harmful, and patients experiencing them may require dosage adjustments or a change in medication. - Unexplained vision changes
- Severe headache
- Pain behind the eye
- Severe or persistent eye irritation
- Swelling
- Crusting around the eyes
- Blurred vision, seeing halos around lights
Durezol is a topical drug, so the chances of interactions between oral, inhaled or injected drugs and this medicine are greatly reduced. However, there may be some drugs that can interact with Durezol, and it is important for patients to disclose all the medications they are using to the doctor. Other ophthalmic medications should not be used alongside Durezol without prior consultation with the doctor.
Warnings & Precautions of Durezol
Patients who are allergic to difluprednate or any other ingredient in Durezol emulsion should avoid this drug.
Durezol is contraindicated in patients who have any type of viral, fungal or bacterial eye infection and other infections like chickenpox.
The safety of this drug during pregnancy or the breastfeeding stage has not been established.
