Description of Depakene
Depakene belongs to a class of medications called anticonvulsants and is used to manage and control certain types of seizures. Its generic name is valproic acid.
Depakene works on the central nervous system to reduce the number and severity of seizures.
Depakene is meant for oral administration. You can buy Depakene in the form of Depakene 250mg or Depakene 500mg tablets or Depakene syrup.
Apart from valproic acid, Depakene contains the following inactive ingredients: glycerin, methylparaben, propylparaben, artificial cherry flavor, dye, water, sucrose, vanillin, and sorbitol.
Indications & Dosage of Depakene
Depakene is primarily used to treat different kinds of seizures, and it is sometimes combined with other medicines. It is also indicated to treat mood disorder such as manic bipolar disorder and to prevent migraine headaches.
Depakene works by restoring the balance of certain neurotransmitters in the brain.
The dose of Depakene is determined by a number of factors, including:
- The seizure type
- weight of the patient
- other medical conditions you may have
- other medications you may be taking
The initial dosage of Depakene for treating complex partial seizures is 10-15mg per kg per day. If the total daily dose exceeds 250 mg, then it should be divided into 2-3 equal doses throughout the day.
The initial dosage for less severe seizures is 15mg per kg of weight per day.
Side Effects & Interactions of Depakene
Call your doctor at once and stop using Depakene if you have any of these serious side effects:
- unexplained weakness, confusion, vomiting, fainting;
- easy bruising or bleeding;
- weakness, lack of coordination;
- Redness, blisters or rashes on skin
- extreme drowsiness;
- fever, chills, skin rash, swollen glands, flu symptoms;
Less serious side effects of Depakene may include:
- mild drowsiness;
- tremors (shaking);
- hair loss;
- weight changes;
- diarrhea, constipation, upset stomach;

Depakene may react with certain drugs and result in undesirable effects. The following is a partial list:
- Amitriptyline (Elavil)
- Aspirin
- Barbiturates such as phenobarbital and Seconal
- Blood-thinning drugs such as Coumadin and Dicumarol
- Tolbutamide (Orinase)
- Zidovudine (Retrovir)
- Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
- Clonazepam (Klonopin)
- Diazepam (Valium)
Warnings & Precautions of Depakene
You should inform your physician about the other drugs you are taking before you buy Depakene in order to prevent unwanted drug interactions.
You should inform your doctor prior to taking Depakene if you have:
- A blood disorder
- Any allergies, including allergies to food, dyes, or preservatives
- Liver disease, such as liver failure or cirrhosis
- A urea cycle disorder
Also, let your doctor know if you are:
- Breastfeeding
- Pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant.
Depakene may lead to low platelets in the blood. Inform your doctor if you have any unusual bruises or bleeding.
Elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects of Depakene. If you are elderly, your doctor should monitor you more closely.
