Cytovene is an anti-viral drug. It is used to treat patients with infection of CMV (cytomegalovirus). It is effectively used in patients having AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). Also, the drug is used for treating patients who have undergone transplant and therefore are at higher risk to get the CMV disease. The generic drug acts by inhibiting the replication of the DNA in the virus. The drug inhibits the dATP which leads to the development of damaged/ faulty DNAs. Cytovene Side Effects and Precautions

The drug may cause allergic reactions such as closing of throat, difficult breathing, hives or swelling (in the tongue, lips, face etc.).

Alternatively, a dosage of 6 mg/kg body weight is administered IV for 5 days in a week. If the CMV retinitis progresses further, then re-induction of the drug is recommended.
