General Information on Comfortis
Comfortis kills fleas on dogs. It can also be used for preventing flea infestation in dogs over 14 weeks of age. Its generic name is Spinosad, and it belongs to the category of anti-parasitic agents.
The drug is available in the form of oral chewable tablets that provide protection to your dog against fleas for an entire month. Flavored chewable tablets are also available so that your pet can take Comfortis easily.
Comfortis causes excitation in the insect’s nervous system, thereby paralyzing them and eventually starving them to death.
Side effects of Comfortis
Vomiting is the most common side effect of Comfortis. Some patients may also experience depression, lethargy, incoordination, decreased appetite, excessive salivation, seizures, trembling, itching, and diarrhea. Some serious side effects of the drug may include excessive dilation of the pupils, disorientation, and even blindness. Take your dog to a veterinarian immediately if it experiences any of these symptoms for a long time.
If your dog vomits within one hour of being given a Comfortis tablet, you should give it another tablet in order to compensate for the previous one which was not ingested properly. Also inform the veterinarian if your pet experiences vocalization, cough, increased thirst, skin redness, or hyperactivity. Contact the veterinarian if your dog shows signs of any other unusual condition or behavioral changes. Do not give Comfortis to your dog if it has a history of seizures.
Dosage of Comfortis
Comfortis is not meant to be given to dogs that are less than 14 weeks of age. The minimum recommended dosage of the drug is Comfortis 13.5mg/lb, which equals Comfortis 30mg/kg of the pet’s weight.
Comfortis is available in different boxes according to the weight of the dog. The pink box contains 140mg tablets meant for dogs weighing between 5 to 10lbs. The orange box contains 270mg tablets, appropriate for dogs weighing 10.1 to 20lbs. The green box has 560mg tablets, given to dogs weighing between 20.1 to 40lbs, and the blue box has 810mg tablets meant for dogs weighing between 40.1 to 60lbs. There is also a brown box which has 1620mg tablets for dogs weighing between 60.1 to 120lbs. The box you choose depends on the weight of your dog.
You can give the tablets to your pet along with or in its food. Only one tablet of Comfortis is enough to protect your dog from fleas for an entire month. However, you should follow the veterinarian’s instructions closely in order to obtain the best results for your pet.
You can start Comfortis treatment at any time of the year, but you should preferably start it one month before the fleas become active and continue administering it until the end of the flea season. If fleas are common all through the year in your area, you can continue giving the tablets to your dog all year round.
