Description of Cefzil
Cefzil has Cefprozil as its active ingredient, and it belongs to the class of cephalosporin antibiotics. You can buy Cefzil in the form of oral tablets as well as oral suspension. Tablets are available in 250 and 500mg strengths, and oral suspension is available in 125mg/5ml and 250mg/5ml strengths. Some of the inactive ingredients present in the medicine include cellulose, simethicone, polysorbate 80, sorbic acid, sodium chloride, citric acid and flavors.
Indications & Dosage of Cefzil
Cefzil is used for treating different types of bacterial infections, including tonsillitis, pharyngitis, acute sinusitis, secondary bacterial infections of acute bronchitis, chronic bronchitis and infections of the skin or skin structure. The medicine works by fighting the susceptible bacteria to stop their growth and spread.
The dosage may range from Cefzil 250mg to 500mg per day, depending on the type and severity of the infection. Usually, you will be advised to take the drug for around 10 days. However, the duration of treatment may vary, depending on your individual requirements.
If you are using tablets, you will have to take them with a full glass of water. If you are using the oral suspension, shake it well before measuring the dose. The oral suspension will need to be consumed within 14 days of opening the bottle. Throw away any leftover medicine.
Side Effects & Interactions of Cefzil
Some of the side effects commonly associated with Cefzil include:
- Stomach pain, nausea, mild diarrhea, vomiting
- Tight or stiff muscles
- Restlessness, hyperactivity, dizziness
- Unpleasant or unusual taste in mouth
- Vaginal discharge or itching
- Skin rash or mild itching
- Diaper rash in infants taking Cefzil oral suspension
Seek medical attention immediately if you develop any serious side effects of Cefzil. These include:
- Bloody or watery diarrhea
- Chills, flu symptoms, body aches, fever
- Unusual bleeding
- Seizures, convulsions
- Yellowed or pale skin, fever, dark colored urine, weakness, confusion
- Jaundice, yellowing of eyes or skin
- Throat soreness, red skin rash, headache with severe blistering
- Bruising, skin rash, numbness, severe tingling, muscle weakness, pain
- Increased thirst, swelling, loss of appetite, weight gain, shortness of breath, decreased or stopped urination
Before you buy Cefzil, inform your doctor about all the drugs you are taking at present, especially other antibiotics (e.g. gentamicin, amikacin or neomycin), diuretics (e.g. bumetanide, furosemide or hydrochlorothiazide) or probenecid.
Warnings & Precautions of Cefzil
Cefzil is not meant to be used by patients who have kidney disease, those who are on dialysis, or those who have a history of colitis or any other intestinal problem.
Cefzil passes into breast milk and may harm the nursing infant. Therefore, breastfeeding mothers should not use this drug, or they should temporarily stop breastfeeding the child during Cefzil treatment.
Cefzil oral suspension may contain phenylalanine. Therefore, it is important to inform your doctor beforehand if you have PKU or phenylketonuria, as it may prove to be harmful for the patient.
