Description of Buscopan
Buscopan has hyoscine butylbromide as its active ingredient, and it falls under the category of antispasmodics. You can buy Buscopan in the form of blister packs containing 20 shiny, small, white colored tablets. Apart from the major ingredient, the tablets also contain calcium hydrogen phosphate, soluble starch, maize starch, stearic acid, tartaric cid and colloidal anhydrous silica. The tablet sugar coating is made of white beeswax, carnauba wax, macrogol 6000, titanium dioxide, acacia, purified talc, povidone and sucrose.
Indications & Dosage of Buscopan
Buscopan is an oral medication used to relieve muscle cramps in the gut, stomach, bladder, urinary system, and intestines. In some cases, it can also be used to relieve IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome symptoms. The drug works by relaxing the muscles in the walls of these organs. By blocking the receptors of these muscle cells, it prevents acetylcholine from working on the muscles. This results in relaxation of the muscles and a reduction of painful spasms and cramps.
Patients over 12 years of age are prescribed two Buscopan 10mg tablets four times a day. Patients aged 6 to 12 years are given one Buscopan 10mg tablet three times a day. However, the dosage depends on the patient’s age, medical condition and response to the treatment.
If you are using Buscopan for treating IBS, you will be advised to take one Buscopan 10mg tablet three times a day.
Take the tablets with water, without crushing, chewing or breaking them. Try to take Buscopan at almost the same time each day.
Side Effects & Interactions of Buscopan
