General Information On Alphagan P
Alphagan P is a prescription medicine used for treating high eye pressure in patients suffering from ocular hypertension or open angle glaucoma. The drug known by its generic name Brimonidine Ophthalmic and it belongs to a class of drugs known as Alpha Adrenergic Agonists, also commonly known as Alpha Agonists.
Alphagan P works by stimulating the alpha receptors in the eye, thereby causing two important effects – it reduces the amount of fluid known as aqueous humor produced by the eye, and increases the drainage rate. This in turn reduces eye pressure. Alphagan P is available in drop form and is administered externally. It is not meant for oral consumption.
Side effects of Alphagan P
Just like other eye drops, Alphagan P has the potential to cause side effects. While the side effects in most cases are minor and temporary, a patient using Alphagan P may experience serious side effects on rare occasions.
Before you buy Alphagan P online, you must inform your doctor about all your health problems. Avoid using Alphagan P if you are suffering from the following:
- High blood pressure or heart disease
- Liver diseases such as improper liver functioning
- Kidney disease
- History of low blood pressure
- Berger’s disease or Raynaud’s Syndrome
The less serious side effects of Alphagan P are:
- Mild stomach pain or stomach upset
- Nausea, mild headache, dizziness
- Reddening of the eyes or blurred vision
- Burning or itching sensation in the eye, sensitivity to light
- Lack of sound sleep
- Dry mouth or unpleasant, bitter taste in the mouth and sore throat
The above side effects are temporary, but if they persist or worsen, you must consult your doctor and seek treatment for it.
If your suffer from any of the following serious but rare side effects, you must immediately rush to the doctor for treatment:
- Irregular heartbeat
- Problems with breathing, heaviness in the chest, or feeling like you may faint
- Intense eye pain or watery eyes
- Swelling or redness in the eye
- Numbness in the hands or feet
Dosage of Alphagan P
Doctors determine the Alphagan P dosage depending the severity of the condition and the type of other eye medicines you are using. One drop of Alphagan P, three times a day, is recommended for treating high eye pressure.
To get the maximum benefit from the drug, you must follow the dosage exactly as prescribed by the doctor. It is also important that you store the eye drops well to prevent contamination of the medicine. Do not touch the dropper’s tip to any surface including the surface of the affected eye. If you are using any other eye drops, make sure that you maintain a gap of at least 5 minutes between the use of Alphagan P and other eye drops.
Interactions
Before you buy Alphagan P, inform your doctor about the other medicines you are using. This is important because Alphagan P can lead to adverse drug interactions if used with other medications. This increases the risks of serious side effects and reduces the effectiveness of other drugs.
