What is AeroKat Feline Aerosol Chamber?
The AeroKat Feline Aerosol Chamber was developed by Trudell Medical International to assist in the delivery of asthma medication to cats. It is used in combination with a metered dose inhaler (MDI), also called a puffer, to safely and more easily deliver the effective dose of medication that cats need to cope with their asthma. The chamber looks like a transparent plastic oxygen tube with an oxygen mask at the end that fits snugly over the cat’s face. It is shatterproof and anti-static, ensuring that the intended medication will reach the cat’s lungs as deeply as possible.
Typical puffers release medicines at speeds up to 60 miles per hour. Speeds this high can startle a kitten or cat and make it impossible to administer the proper dosage of asthma medication. The AeroKat Feline Aerosol Chamber is used in combination with a metered dose inhaler to ensure that cats and kittens are given the proper and most effective dose of asthma medication possible. The chamber holds the puffer in place and the mask fits tightly over the face of the cat. Once the mask is secure, the cat is able to breathe several times, inhaling asthma medication deep into its lungs.
This method of administration is often chosen over oral methods (pills, syrups, or injections). Many of the aforementioned methods for administering corticosteroids can have serious side effects for animals. All of these side effects can be avoided by using inhaled aerosols. This is the same method that doctors prefer for humans.
AeroKat Feline Aerosol Chamber is to be used in combination with an MDI. For now, most users pets are prescribed Ventolin, Proventil, or a Flovent Inhaler to use with the chamber. Trudell Medical International doesn’t endorse any specific MDI, but it does note that most patients are prescribed one of the previous three MDI’s.
The ultimate goal of AeroKat therapy is to reverse airflow obstruction with the use of bronchodilators and control inflammation with corticosteroids. This w
How to use AeroKat Feline Aerosol Chamber
Before using this product, make sure that no parts are missing or broken. Check the chamber for foreign objects. If any exist, remove them from the chamber. If nothing is missing or broken, proceed with the following steps to administer asthma medication to your cat.
1. Insert metered dose inhaler (MDI) into back of chamber. Hold the feline Aerosol Chamber and MDI together. Shake rapidly.
2. Soothingly apply the mask to the face of the cat. Be sure that there is a successful seal.
3. When the cat inhales, depress MDI and hold the mask in place. Do this for 5 to 6 breaths. You will know the cat is inhaling by carefully monitoring the Flow-Vu Inspiratory Flow Indicator. When your cat is inhaling, the IFI will flutter or move closer to your cat.
4. Remember: When the cat stops inhaling, or exhales, the Flow-Vu IFI returns to a vertical position. Watch this closely. Follow dosage instructions. Make sure only one puff is delivered at a time.
5. Your MDI should come with specific dosage instructions from your veterinarian. Repeat steps as indicated with MDI instructions.
