What is Femara?
Femera blocks the use of estrogen by certain types of breast cancer that require estrogen to grow. Femera is used to treat breast cancer.
How It Works
Femera is an Aromatase inhibitor which interferes with the production of estrogen in women who have gone through menopause. This limits the amount of estrogen available for breast cancer tumor growth.
Why It Is Used
Aromatase inhibitors are estrogen production-blocking agents used to treat estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. They are not approved for use in women who have not yet completed menopause. They may be used for the treatment of early-stage breast cancer as well as following 2 to 3 years of treatment with tamoxifen (Nolvadex). They are also used to treat metastatic or recurrent breast cancer.¹, ²

Breast cancer is a disease in which cells in the breast start to grow rapidly in an uncontrolled manner. Breast cancer is a common cancer in women over age 50.
While the number of women who have breast cancer increases with age, the disease may also affect women in their 40s and rarely women in their 30s. Having a family history of breast cancer is an important risk factor, but most women who develop breast cancer do not have any known risk factors. Although rare, breast cancer can occur in men.
The most common symptom of breast cancer is a lump or thickening in the breast. Other symptoms include changes in the skin of the breast, spontaneous nipple discharge or bleeding, and scaling or crusting of the nipple.
Treatment for breast cancer depends on the stage of it, whether nearby lymph nodes contain cancer cells, and how the cancer cells look under the microscope. Treatment usually includes surgery to remove the cancer. Chemotherapy and radiation may also be used to treat breast cancer.
