What is Effexor (venlafaxine)?
Venlafaxine (ven-la-FAX-een) is used to treat mental depression. It is also used to treat certain anxiety disorders or to relieve the symptoms of anxiety. However, it usually is not used for anxiety or tension caused by the stress of everyday life. This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription, in the following dosage forms:

What are the Effexor side effects?
Effexor XR may cause side effects in some people.
In clinical studies, the most common side effects included:
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Sleepiness
- Abnormal ejaculation
- Sweating
- Dry mouth
- Gas
- Abnormal vision
- Nervousness
- Insomnia
- Anorexia
- Constipation
- Confusion/agitation
- Tremor
- Yawning
- Palpitation
Inform your doctor if you are suffering from:
- increases in heart rate.
- extreme confusion or seizures, which may indicate very low levels of sodium in the blood.
- abnormal bleeding or bruising.
- sudden, unexpected eye pain, eye redness, or changes in vision, which may indicate increased eye pressure.
- symptoms of mania or hypomania, such as persistently elevated or irritable mood, a decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, hyperactivity, and rapid, excessive speech.
Effexor Xr may cause an increase in your level of cholesterol. Your doctor may want to do blood tests to check your serum cholesterol periodically. This may cause weigh gain. In general however, effexor and weight gain are not related.
Can Effexor and pregnancy go together?
Please tell your doctor if you are pregnant, intend to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. Newborns whose mothers took Effexor Xr late in the third trimester experienced some health problems. Because of those problems, the newborns needed long hospital stays, help with breathing, and tube feeding.
Until you see how Effexor Xr affects you, be careful doing such activities as driving a car or operating machinery. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medication. Effexor Xr may cause other side effects besides those listed above.
What happens after Effexor XR withdrawal? ( Effexor XR and insomnia)
Withdrawal symptoms are known to occur when people stop using Effexor XR, especially when they suddenly stop therapy.
When people suddenly withdraw Effexor XR, they can get symptoms from stopping the medicine too fast such as insomnia. Some of these effexor withdrawl symptoms include:
- Agitation
- Anxiety
- Confusion
- Diarrhea
- Dizziness or vertigo
- Dry mouth
- Fasciculation (muscle twitching)
- Headaches
- Hypomania
- Impaired coordination
- Insomnia (trouble sleeping)
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea
- Nervousness
- Nightmares
- Seizures
- Sensory disturbances (including electric shock sensations)
- Somnolence (sleepiness)
- Sweating
- Tinnitus
- Tiredness
- Tremor
- Unpleasant mood
- Vomiting
What is difference between effexor and 5 htp?
5 htp is basically serotonin. Effexor also increases serotonin in the brain, so they both are doing the same thing, but in different ways. There is no harm in that, but you can also increase the dose of effexor to get the same result. Ask your doctor about that.
