What is ditropan ( Oxybutynin)?
Ditropan is a tertiary amine anticholinergic agent which exerts antimuscarinic as well as direct antispasmodic action on smooth muscle. In addition to its smooth muscle relaxing effects, oxybutynin chloride exerts an analgesic and a local anesthetic effect.
Oxybutynin relaxes bladder smooth muscle. In patients with uninhibited neurogenic and reflex neurogenic bladder, c studies have demonstrated that oxybutynin increases bladder (vesical) capacity, diminishes the frequency of uninhibited contractions of the detrusor muscle, and delays the initial desire to void. Oxybutynin thus decreases urgency and frequency of both incontinent episodes and voluntary urination. Ditropan relieves spasms of the bladder and urinary tract.
Ditropan is used to treat the symptoms of urinary frequency, urinary urgency, urinary leakage, painful or difficult urination, urinary incontinence, and nighttime urination.
Contraindications
In patients with urinary retention, gastric retention, or uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma and in patients who are at risk for these conditions.
Extended release oxybutynin is contraindicated in patients who have demonstrated hypersensitivity to the drug substance or other components of the product associated with overactive bladder.
Possible Side effects of Ditropan:
The most common side effects were dry mouth, constipation and somnolence.
Other adverse events have been reported with oxybutynin: tachycardia, hallucinations, cycloplegia, mydriasis, impotence, and suppression of lactation
