GERD Symptoms
GERD or gastro esophageal reflux disease is a disorder that affects millions of people. GERD symptoms can vary slightly depending on age however GERD can affect people from infancy through adulthood.
When you have an infant, spitting up is simply a part of the joy of parenthood. It is when the reflux or spitting up becomes excessive that you should be on the lookout for other GERD symptoms found in infants. Many of the GERD symptoms in babies will be noticeable during feeding. They may be much fussier than normal even crying when you try to feed them. Frequent cases of the hiccups or dry coughs can also be signs to look out for. You may also notice that they awaken often during the night coughing.
Younger children will have many of these symptoms and some that will be easier to spot when child is able to describe the discomfort to you. They may experience the more traditional burning type of pain behind the breast bone. They may suffer from frequent sore throats and even be more prone to respiratory disorders such as asthma or bronchitis. Children with GERD can suffer from dysphasia meaning they have trouble swallowing often gagging as the food does not travel down properly. They may become a bit pickier about the food they eat as they start to associate certain foods making things worse. You may also begin to notice some drooling.
The GERD symptoms in teenagers again are almost the same as the younger children. They will often experience chest pain along with a burning sensation in their throat. Dysphasia may continue to be an issue and their eating habits may get even picker when they begin to see the relationship between certain foods and the gastro esophageal reflux disease.
In adults the top four GERD symptoms would be chest pain, heartburn, painful swallowing and a sour regurgitation in the back of their throat. One thing that you want to be sure of in adults most especially is that if the chest pain that you are experiencing is associated with any shortness of breath or pain in the arm or jaw, you should seek medical help immediately as these can be signs of a heart attack. When that has been ruled out and the symptoms persist while using over the counter remedies, you must seek help from your doctor to treat the GERD properly.
