What is Zithromax used for?
Zithromax is used for treatment of respiratory infections, skin infections, ear infections caused by bacteria. It is also used to treat sexually transmitted diseases.
The drug is also indicated for the treatment of children, who suffer from middle ear infection, pneumonia, tonsillitis and strep throat.
How does Zithromax work?
Zithromax works by suppressing the growth of bacteria in the body.
How to use Zithromax
You should not take the medicine in excess amount or for longer period than recommended. Taking tablet with full glass of water is necessary. If you want to use the single dose packet of oral suspension, then pour the medicine in two ounces of water and drink the mixture at once. Do not keep the mixture for later use.
You can take Zithromax with or without food. If taking this medicine on an empty stomach upsets your stomach, it is advisable that you take it with a meal. You can take the capsule one hour before or two hours after a meal.
If the medicine results in disturbing your digestive system, then take Zithromax tablet or oral suspension with food.
Zithromax warnings and precautions
Complete the full course of medication, as per the instructions of your doctor. You may start feeling better before you are completely cured from the infection. Always remember that Zithromax is used for the treatment of bacterial infection and not for the treatment of viral infection.
Preserve this medicine at appropriate room temperature and keep it away from excess heat and moisture. Completely avoid taking antacids that contain aluminum and magnesium before and after two hours of taking Zithromax. These antacids can decrease the effectiveness of the medicine.
Talk to your doctor before taking antibiotics, which can lead to diarrhea and don’t take any medicine to get relief from diarrhea unless your doctor suggests you. You will become more sensitive after taking Zithromax, so you are advised to keep away from sunlight, sunlamps or tanning beds.
It is suggested that before going out in the sun, wear protective clothing and use sunscreen with SPF 15 or high.
What do I do if I have missed a Zithromax dose?
If you have missed your Zithromax dose, you should take it instantaneously. Do not take two doses at one time. Skip the missed dose if it’s time to take the next dose.
What do I do if I have taken a Zithromax overdose?
If you have taken a Zithromax overdose, you should go for emergency medical treatment. Common symptoms of overdose are nausea, stomach upset, vomiting and diarrhea.
Zithromax interactions
There are many drugs which can interact with Zithromax. You must consult your medical health provider before taking the medicines like carbamazepine, digoxin, phenytoin, cyclosporine, theophylline, pimozide, triazolam and warfarin as these drugs can easily interact with Zithromax.
Antibiotics, especially clarithromycin or erythromycin, can also interact with Zithromax.
Zithromax side effects
If you notice signs of severe allergic reactions like hives; swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat; or difficulty in respiration, immediately seek medical help. Some of the serious side effects of Zithromax are diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, pain in stomach, mild fever, loss of appetite, jaundice, clay-colored stools, dark urine, sore throat and headache with rigorous blistering, peeling and red skin rash.
