What is Zanaflex?

Zanaflex is an α2-adrenergic agonist and a muscle relaxant.


What is Zanaflex used for?

Zanaflex is used for curbing pain, stiffness and spasms in muscles, usually caused by conditions like multiple sclerosis or some spinal injuries.

How to use Zanaflex

The dosage of this drug is decided by your doctor after taking into account a number of medical factors. Initial doses are usually less intense with later ones being heavier. Zanaflex is for oral use and it starts showing its effects after one or two hours. It lasts only for six hours. Abide by what your doctor has instructed but make sure your daily dose does not exceed the mark of 36 milligrams per day or three tablets in maximum 12 hours.

The absorption of this drug depends upon the way you take it. It can be taken on empty stomach or after your meal. You can even take it by sprinkling over the food you eat, if you have problem swallowing it. Make sure that the form of the dose you take is decided by your physician and do not experiment with the doses on your own.


Zanaflex warnings and precautions

Also, tell him about allergies that you have experienced in the past or have at the time when your doctor prescribes you Zanaflex. Notify your doctor in case you have a history of blood pressure, heart diseases, or kidney and liver-related troubles.

It is advised not to take alcohol while you are taking Zanaflex as this may increase the risk of side effects. Also, avoid doing attention demanding activities like operating machinery, doing heavy exercise or driving after taking your Zanaflex dose. This drug is linked with the feeling of dizziness, so when you stand up after lying or sitting for a long time, stand very carefully.

Pregnant and lactating women should take this drug only after the doctor clearly prescribes it.


What do I do if I have missed a Zanaflex dose?

If you have missed your Zanaflex dose, you should take it immediately, but if it is nearly time for your next dose, leave the dose and return back to your directed schedule.


What do I do if I have taken a Zanaflex overdose?

If you have taken a Zanaflex overdose, you should talk to your doctor and avoid trying any remedial measures at home without supervision of your physician.


Zanaflex interactions

If you are taking birth control pills, anti-arrhythmics like amiodarone and propafenone, blood pressure drugs, including lisinopril, clonidine and guanabenz, consult your doctor before starting your course of testament with Zanaflex. Also avoid taking anti-depressants, sleeping pills, narcotic pain relievers and anti-seizure drugs concurrently with Zanaflex.


Zanaflex side effects

Commonly, the patients have reported minor Zanaflex side effects like dizziness, fatigue, constipation and dry mouth.

Zanaflex has also been associated with serious problems in some extreme cases, including fainting, irregular or slow heart beat, hearing loss, vision changes, symptoms of liver disease, intense allergic reactions, and problem in normal breathing.
