What is Vectical?

Vectical (calcitriol) is a topical medication, which is a form of Vitamin – D, used to treat a certain skin condition, known as psoriasis.

What is Vectical used for?

Vectical is used in the treatment of mild to moderate plaque psoriasis which shows symptoms such as raised, silvery flaking of skin. The medication is used in adults only.

How does Vectical work?

Calcitriol, the main component of Vectical, is a synthetic form of Vitamin D. It decreases the growth rate of skin cells to prevent thickening and scaling of skin.

How to use Vectical

Vectical should be used in the manner prescribed by a doctor. Using the medication for longer time or in larger amount than prescribed may prove to be harmful. The dosage depends on your medical condition and response to treatment. Read and follow instructions given along with product package carefully.

Vectical ointment is generally used twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.

Wash your hands before applying the ointment. Apply a thin layer of the cream evenly to cover the affected area completely and rub in gently. Do not cover or wrap the area with cloth or bandage after application of the cream. Wash your hands afterwards unless your hands are also being treated.

Do not use the medication on areas such as face, underarms, or vagina. In case of accidental contact flush the area with water.

Also avoid contact of the medication with unaffected skin.

It may take more than 4 weeks for your symptoms to improve. Continue using the medication regularly. Do not change or stop your dose without consultation with your doctor. However, if your condition does not improve at all or becomes worse consult your doctor immediately.

Vectical warnings and precautions

Vectical is not administered to patients who are allergic to calcitriol. Severe forms of psoriasis with severe redness, pus, peeling of skin should not be treated with this medication.

Before taking the medication, inform your doctor about your medical conditions, especially if you are allergic to any other medication or skin product or if you have low or high levels of calcium in blood, a skin infection, liver or kidney disease, a calcium disorder or a metabolic disorder. There may be a dose adjustment in such conditions. Also, inform your doctor if you are undergoing phototherapy for psoriasis.

Avoid using Vectical on face, near eyes, nose, mouth, groin or areas with skin folds or thin skin.

Prolonged use of this medicine may cause thinning of skin. You should discuss the risks of long term use with your doctor.

Vectical can increase skin sensitivity to sunlight or UV rays. Avoid prolonged exposure to UV lights. Also wear protective clothing and use a sunscreen of minimum SPF 15 while stepping out into the sun. Avoid procedures such as tanning.

Effects of Vectical on a fetus or a nursing baby are not known for certain. Therefore, pregnant and lactating women are advised to discuss the possible risks and benefits of using this medication with their doctors.

What do I do if I have missed a Vectical dose?

If you have missed a Vectical dose, use it as soon as you remember. If, however, it is almost time for the next dose, the missed dose can be skipped. Do not use a double dose.

What do I do if I have taken a Vectical overdose?

If you have used an overdose of Vectical, consult your doctor.  Due to its topical nature, an overdose with Vectical is rare.

Vectical interactions

Vectical may interact with diuretics, vitamin-mineral supplements containing calcium or vitamin D and other medications for psoriasis. Other drugs may also interfere with the action of this medication. Hence it is necessary to inform your doctor about all the skin products/ prescription/ non prescription drugs/herbal medicines that you are using/ taking beforehand.

You should not start using any new topical product without consulting your doctor.

Vectical side effects

Side effects from Vectical include allergic reactions such as swelling of tongue, face, throat, hives, redness of skin etc. as well as some serious side effects such as hypercalcemia (confusion, loss of appetite, tiredness, increased thirst, nausea, restlessness, muscle weakness, increased urination, constipation) signs of skin infection such as redness, itching, swelling or pus, severe skin irritation of the treated area, or worsening of psoriasis.
