Travatan

What is Travatan Z?

Travatan (travoprost ophthalmic solution) is a synthetic prostaglandin F2 (alpha) analogue.

What is Travatan Z used for?

Travatan is indicated for the treatment of open-angle glaucoma. It is also used to treat high pressure in the eye (ocular hypertension). Lowering high pressure inside the eye can help prevent blindness.

How does Travatan Z work?

Travatan works by regulating the flow of fluid within the eye in order to maintain a normal pressure.

How to use Travatan Z

Travatan should be taken in the manner prescribed by the doctor. Taking it for longer periods or in larger amounts than recommended can cause problems in the eyes.

Put Travatan in the affected eye(s) once daily. Wash your hands properly before using the medicine.

To apply the eye drops, follow the steps mentioned below:

  • Tilt your head back slightly.
  • Pull down on the lower eyelid
  • Hold the eye dropper above the eye. Make sure that the dropper is tipped down.
  • Look up. Don’t look into the dropper, look away from it.
  • Squeeze out one drop and close your eye.
  • Press your fore-finger gently to the inside corner of the eye (near the nose). Do it for about a minute to prevent the liquid from draining into your tear duct.
  • Wait for at least 5 minutes before using any other prescribed eye drops.

Travatan Z warnings and precautions

Do not use Travatan if you are allergic to travoprost, bimatoprost, latanoprost, benzalkonium chloride; or if you have any other allergies.

Travatan may cause a gradual change in eye color or color of eyelids and lashes. It may also increase the growth or thickness of eyelashes as well as cause an increase in brown pigment.

Do not touch the dropper as contaminated dropper can cause infection in the eye resulting in loss of vision or damage to the eye. Remember not to use the medicine while wearing contact lenses. Wait for at least 15 minutes before putting your lenses in the eyes.

Pregnant women should not use this drug as it may harm an unborn baby. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, tell your doctor in advance. Lactating women should not use this drug without consulting their doctors. The drug could harm a nursing baby.

What do I do if I have missed a Travatan Z dose?

If you have missed your Travatan dose, you can take the missed dose as soon as you remember but do not take it if it is time for your next (scheduled) dose.

What do I do if I have taken a Travatan Z overdose?

If you have taken a Travatan overdose, you should seek emergency medical attention.

Travatan Z interactions

Before taking Travatan, tell your doctor about all prescription and nonprescription drugs that you use. Also, do not start taking any new medicine without consulting your doctor.

Travatan Z side effects

Travatan side effects include hives, swelling or pain in or around the eye, breathing difficulty, chest pain, increased sensitivity to light, oozing or discharge from the eye, redness or itching in or around the eye, vision changes, and other allergic reactions. If you get any of these side effects after using Travatan, contact your doctor.

Mild eye discomfort, blurred vision, dry or watery eyes, headache, or stinging or burning of the eyes after using the drops are some less serious side effects of Travatan.
