What is Topicort?
Topicort (desoximetasone topical) is a corticosteroid. The topical corticosteroids constitute a class of primarily synthetic steroids used as anti-inflammatory and antipruritic agents.
What is Topicort used for?
Topicort is indicated for the treatment of a variety of skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, rashes and allergies caused by psoriasis. It reduces the redness, swelling and itching associated with these conditions.
How does Topicort work?
Topicort works by reducing the action of chemicals in the body which cause redness, swelling and inflammation.
How to use Topicort
Topicort should be used in the manner prescribed by a doctor. Using it for a longer time period or in larger amount than recommended can cause harm to the skin.
You should wash your hands and the applying area before applying this medicine. Dry the area before applying the medicine and make sure that your hands are also dry. Apply a thin film of the medicine on the affected area and rub gently. You should do this procedure two times a day or as directed by your doctor. Please ensure that you do not bandage the affected area unless you are instructed to do so by your doctor.
If you are using this medicine in infants in the diaper area, make sure that the diapers are not tight fitting. After applying the medicine, wash and dry your hands.
Topicort warnings and precautions
Before using Topicort, you should discuss with your doctor, if you are allergic to this drug or any other corticosteroids. You should also discuss if you have a history of immune system problems or poor blood circulation. Any serious injury or illness, surgeries or any emergency treatment should be discussed with your physician before taking this drug.
Children are much more sensitive to this drug than adults. Topicort may affect the growth of children often slowing it down. It may not however affect the final height of the child. However, it is advised that you keep a periodical check on your child’s height.
You should also avoid contact of this medicine with your eyes, broken or infected skin.
Pregnant women and breast feeding mothers should also consult your doctor before using Topicort.
What do I do if I have missed a Topicort dose?
If you have missed a Topicort dose, use it as soon as you remember. If, however, it is almost time for the next dose, the missed dose can be skipped.
What do I do if I have taken a Topicort overdose?
Athough an overdose of Topicort does not cause any life- threatening situations, however it is advised to seek medical attention immediately. Long term usage of this medicine may produce symptoms such as a change in the shape/ location of body fat, thinning of the skin, tendency to get bruised easily, increased acne, menstrual problems, impotency and also a sudden loss of interest in sex.
Topicort interactions
The following drugs should not be used during treatment with Topicort: Oral corticosteroids and drugs that are used to suppress the immune system. You should inform your doctor if you are taking any of these drugs.
You should not start taking any new medicine, without consulting your doctor.
Topicort side effects
Side effects from Topicort include allergic reaction to facial organs, blurred or haloed vision, mood swings and puffiness of face, tiredness and insomnia. In such situations, you should stop using Topicort and consult your doctor immediately.
You can also experience some mild itchiness, peeling and dryness, skin rashes or swollen hair follicles. Stretch marks, blisters, pimples and thinning and softening of your hair are some common and less serious side effects of Topicort.
