What is Theo 24?

Theo 24 is an oral bronchodilator that belongs to a class of drugs known as xanthines.


What is Theo 24 used for?

Theo 24 is indicated for the prevention and treatment of wheezing and breathing trouble caused by lung diseases such as asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema. However, it is important to note that the medicine does not treat asthma attack that has already begun.


How does Theo 24 work?

Theo 24 contains theophylline which works by relaxing the bronchial muscles, clearing the airway passage to ease breathing and reduce lung irritation.


How to use Theo 24

Take Theo 24 in the manner prescribed by your doctor. Taking it for longer duration or in larger amount than recommended can cause health problems.

Do not break, crush or chew the tablet unless instructed to do so by the doctor. Swallow the tablet whole, with a full glass of water. Take the medicine preferably in the day.

If you are using the extended release version of Theo 24, sprinkle the contents on a soft food like applesauce and take the mixture. Drink a full glass of liquid after the consumption of this mixture.


Theo 24 warnings and precautions

Do not use Theo 24 if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or to any other bronchodilator. Your dosage might have to be altered if you have cystic fibrosis, glaucoma, diabetes, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, liver or kidney disease, seizure or any other stomach or intestinal disorder.

Do not take up tasks that demand alertness as the medicine can make you drowsy. Abstain from alcohol completely.

Use Theo 24 with caution if you are an elderly person as it has been known to affect the elders as they are more sensitive to it.

Pregnant and lactating mothers must consult their doctor before taking this medicine.


What do I do if I have missed a Theo 24 dose?

If you have missed a dose of Theo 24, take it when you remember and do not double up the amount.


What do I do if I have taken a Theo 24 overdose?

If you have taken an overdose of Theo 24, contact the nearest poison control center.


Theo 24 interactions

Some drugs like febuxostat interact adversely with Theo 24; therefore they must not be used in tandem with it. Inform your doctor if you are taking medicines like adenosine, ephedrine, psuedoephrine, phenylephrine; aminoglutethimide , Allopurinol; mexiletine, propafenone; diazepam, fluarzepam,; benzodiazepines; beta blockers like pranolol; birth control pills; cimetide, disulfiram, digoxin, interferon, macrolide, lithium, Methotrexate, pentoxyfylline, certain quinolones, St. John’s wort, tacrine, thiabendazole, rifampin, etc

Tell your doctor about all the prescribed and non prescribed drugs, diet aids, herbal products that you are using, before starting your course of treatment with Theo 24.


Theo 24 side effects

Stomach pain or cramping, nausea, vomiting, headache, insomnia, irritability, diarrhea, loss of appetite, restlessness, nervousness, shaking, flushing and increased urination are some of the common side effects of Theo 24. If any of these effects persist, report to the doctor immediately.

Tell your doctor immediately if you suffer from any unlikely, but serious, side effects from Theo 24. These include confusion, dizziness, mood fluctuation, muscle twitching or pain, tenderness or weakness.

Also inform your doctor if you experience irregular heartbeat, dark or tarry stools, seizures, red or scaly skin, itching, swelling on the face, tongue or throat, severe dizziness, or breathing trouble.
