What is Tamiflu?

Tamiflu (oseltamivir) is an antiviral agent that is intended for treatment of influenza.

What is Tamiflu used for?

Tamiflu is indicated for the treatment of influenza including the H1N1 syndrome, in patients who have had flu symptoms for not more than two days.  People who have not developed any symptoms of influenza but have been exposed to it can also be given doses of Tamiflu.

How does Tamiflu work?

Tamiflu works by blocking the actions of influenza virus types A and B in the body, and thereby stopping the virus from growing.

How to use Tamiflu

Tamiflu should be taken in the manner prescribed by the doctor. Taking it for longer periods or in larger amounts than recommended can cause health problems.

The medicine is usually taken twice daily, with a full glass of water. It can be taken with food or milk in order to minimize the chances of getting an upset stomach. It is advisable that you take the medicine as soon as the flu symptoms start appearing or immediately after being exposed to the flu.

In order to prevent the flu, you may take the medicine once daily for a period of 10 days. You may also take the medicine in liquid form. Shake the vial well before use. Do not use a regular tablespoon to measure the dose. Measure it with a special dose measuring device.

Remember to take the medicine at evenly spaced intervals and at the same time(s) each day.

Tamiflu warnings and precautions

Before using Tamiflu, tell your doctor if you are allergic to oseltamivir. Also inform your doctor if you have a kidney or lung disease, heart disease, swelling in brain or brain disorder, any other serious health problem, or if you have used a nasal flu vaccine in the last 14 days.

Do not use a nasal flu vaccine (FluMist) within 48 hours of taking Tamiflu. The medicine is not a substitute for yearly flu shots.

Pregnant and lactating women should not use Tamiflu without consulting their doctors. If you plan to become pregnant, tell your doctor in advance about the use of this medicine.

What do I do if I have missed a Tamiflu dose?

If you have missed your Tamiflu dose, you should take it as soon as you remember. Do not take the medicine if you are left with two hours for your next dose. It will be better to skip the missed dose and follow the regular schedule.

What do I do if I have taken a Tamiflu overdose?

If you have taken a Tamiflu overdose, you should immediately seek medical attention.

Tamiflu interactions

Before taking Tamiflu, tell your doctor about all prescription and non prescription drugs that you use, including mineral and vitamin supplements that you may be using. Also, do not start taking any new medicine without consulting your doctor.

Tamiflu side effects

Tamiflu side effects include hives, a red and blistering skin rash, confusion, hallucinations, delirium, unusual behaviour, self-injury; swelling of face, tongue, lips or throat; and other allergic reactions. These side effects are more common in children. If you or your child gets any of these side effects after using Tamiflu, contact your doctor right away.

Headache, dizziness, nosebleed, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cough (or respiratory problems), redness in eye or eye discomfort, and insomnia are some less serious side effects of Tamiflu.
