Synvisc One

What is Synvisc?

Synvisc is a synthetic version of the natural synovial fluid present in the joints (of a human body).

What is Synvisc used for?

Synvisc is indicated for the treatment of joint inflammation or osteoarthritis (usually of the knee).

How does Synvisc work?

Synvisc contains Hyaluronate which acts as a refurbishment for the absence of synovial fluid in the joints. It acts as a lubricant and reduces inflammation in the joints, helping the joints move smoothly and painlessly.

How to use Synvisc

Synvisc comes in the form of an injection and must be administered by a qualified medical professional.

Synvisc is injected mostly on a weekly basis or as prescribed by the physician.

Remember to limit your movement after the intra-articular injection to let the medicine be absorbed by the muscles in the joint.

Synvisc warnings and precautions

Do not use Synvisc if you are allergic to egg products, birds or bird products and feathers.

If you have a medical history of knee joint infections, skin infections or circulation problems then discuss with your doctor to alter the dosage.

Do not use Synvisc if the injected area swells or develops a rash.

Do not stress your joints too much while you are under this medication. Avoid all movement as far as possible. Do not stress your knees with activities like jogging, tennis and heavy lifting. Tell your doctor about all the exercises and physiotherapy that you have undergone before taking this medication. Accordingly, your dosage will be customized to suit your medical condition.

It is unknown if the unborn baby will be harmed if a pregnant mother uses this medication. Therefore, you must discuss with your doctor the state of affairs if you become pregnant during the course of this medication. Nursing mothers are also advised to check with their doctors if the usage of Synvisc can lead to unwanted complications hindering the nursing child’s health.

What do I do if I have missed a Synvisc dose?

If you have missed a Synvisc dose consult your doctor immediately to start a new dosing schedule. Do not try to start it on your own as the doctor will first check your medical condition and then decide whether you need further treatment.

What do I do if I have taken a Synvisc overdose?

If you have taken an overdose of Synvisc, immediately consult your doctor.

Synvisc interactions

When you are being prescribed with Synvisc, be sure to inform the doctor about all the prescription and non prescription medicines that you are using or will continue to use throughout this treatment.

Also, do not start or stop any medication while you are taking Synvisc.

Synvisc side effects

Some of the common side effects from Synvisc include slight pain, warmth and mild swelling on the injection site. Consult the doctor if these persist and interfere with your daily schedule.

Serious side effects of Synvisc must be reported to the doctor. These consist of nausea, hemorrhoids, calf cramps, ankle edema, muscle pain, sprain in the lower back and psuedosepsis.

Rare but very serious Synvisc side effects like tachyarrhythmia, phlebitis with varicosities,  severe pain, respiratory trouble, severe allergic reaction like uncontrolled itching, rash, hives, swelling in the mouth, tongue, throat and the injected area, large effusions in the knee and synovial eosinophillia have to be treated immediately. They must be reported to the doctor within minutes of their occurring. Failing to do so can lead to some serious complications.
