What is Serc?

Serc (betahistine) is a medication which treats vertigo associated with Ménière's disease. Vertigo is a condition in which a patient has a spinning sensation or sensation of rotation of his/her surroundings as well as of himself/herself.

What is Serc used for?

Serc is used to reduce episodes of vertigo associated with Ménière's disease as well as some other problems such as ringing in the ears (tinnitus), loss of clear hearing, nausea and vomiting.

How does Serc work?

Ménière's disease is an inner ear disorder which is characterized by severe episodes of vertigo along with ringing in ears, headache, nausea etc. Serc is believed to improve blood flow in the inner ear and normalize the way nerve endings in the inner ear respond to external influences. In this way they reduce the number of such episodes of vertigo.

How to use Serc

Serc should be taken exactly in the manner prescribed by a doctor. Taking a higher dose of the medicine than prescribed may prove to be harmful. The dosage depends on your medical condition and response to treatment.

The medicine is usually taken orally thrice a day, preferably at the same times every day. It should be taken with food to prevent stomach upset.

Do not stop or increase the dose without consultation with your doctor.

Serc warnings and precautions

Serc is not administered to patients who are allergic to betahistine or any other ingredient of the medicine. Patients with a history of peptic ulcer and phaeochromocytoma (a rare abnormality of the adrenal gland) are also advised against using Serc. Also, inform your doctor if you have asthma or any other medical condition.

Tell your doctor if you use caffeine, decongestants, alcohol, or nicotine as these may affect the way this drug works.

Serc is not recommended for children younger than 18 years of age.

Pregnant or lactating women are advised not to take Serc as it may be harmful to a fetus or a nursing baby. You should also avoid pregnancy during treatment with this drug.

What do I do if I have missed a Serc dose?

If you have missed a Serc dose, you should take it as soon as you remember.  However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose.

What do I do if I have taken a Serc overdose?

If you have taken an overdose of Serc seek emergency medical attention.

Serc interactions

Antihistamines may interact with Serc. Taking an antihistamine along with Serc may reduce the efficacy of both the drugs. So, it is necessary to inform your doctor about all the prescription and non prescription drugs that you are taking, as priority. Also, inform him if you are using any herbal products or vitamin or mineral supplements.

You should not start taking any new medicine, without consulting your doctor.

Serc side effects

Side effects from Serc are generally not very severe. However, there may be allergic reactions such as swelling in lips, tongue, throat or face, hives, breathing difficulty etc. Seek emergency medical attention on appearance of such symptoms. Serc may even trigger asthma and breathing troubles. Contact your doctor immediately in such situations.

Insomnia, dizziness, headache, fast heartbeat, stomach upsets are some common and less serious side effects of Serc.
