What is Sectral?

Sectral belongs to a class of drugs called beta blockers, which affect the heart and blood circulation in the body through arteries and veins.

What is Sectral used for?

Sectral is indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) and irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). Reducing high blood pressure prevents heart attack, strokes, and kidney troubles.

How does Sectral work?

Sectral works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals which affect the heart and blood vessels and result in lowering of heart rate, blood pressure and strain on the heart. These natural chemicals are epinephrine and adrenaline.

How to use Sectral

Sectral should be taken in the manner prescribed by the doctor. Taking it for longer period or in larger amount than recommended can cause health problems.

Take the medicine orally with a full glass of water. It is usually taken once or twice daily and can be taken with or without food. Remember to take the medicine at the same time each day.

Sectral warnings and precautions

Do not use Sectral if you are allergic to the medicine or if you are suffering from certain heart conditions like slow heart rate, heart block, sick sinus syndrome, congestive heart failure; low blood pressure, asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, diabetes, thyroid disorder, circulation problems (like Raynaud’s syndrome), liver or kidney disease, depression, myasthenia gravis, or pheochromocytoma.

Prior to taking Sectral, it is better to inform your doctor about your medical history. The medicine may impair one’s thinking or reactions, therefore, do not take up any task that requires attention after consuming your Sectral dose. Avoid consuming alcohol while on the prescription period of this medicine.

Although Sectral is unlikely to harm a fetus, pregnant females should consult their doctors before taking the medicine. Lactating women should not use this drug without consulting their doctors, as it may harm a nursing infant.

What do I do if I have missed a Sectral dose?

If you have missed your Sectral dose or if the next dose is just four hours away, skip the missed dose and use it at the time for your next dose. Do not take an extra dose.

What do I do if I have taken a Sectral overdose?

If you have taken a Sectral overdose you should seek immediate medical attention.

Sectral interactions

Before taking Sectral, consult your doctor if you are using clonidine, guanabenz, heart medicines, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI), diabetes medications, diet pills, medicines for cold, asthma or other breathing problems.

Inform your doctor about all prescribed and non prescribed dosages that you are on, including mineral and vitamin supplements that you may be using. Also, do not start taking any new medicine without consulting your doctor.

Sectral side effects

Sectral side effects include hives, slow or fast heartbeats, fainting, light headedness, shortness of breath, nausea, stomach ache, appetite loss, dark colored urine and stools, jaundice, breathing problems; swelling of feet, ankles, face, tongue, lips or throat and other allergic reactions. If you get any of these side effects after using Sectral, contact your doctor.

Fatigue,anxiety, nervousness and sleep related problems such as insomnia are some less serious side effects of Sectral.
