What is Samsca?
Samsca belongs to a class of medications called vasopressin receptor antagonists.
What is Samsca used for?
Samsca is indicated for the treatment of low salt/ sodium levels in the blood. This condition could be a result of liver disease, heart failure and certain hormone imbalances.
How does Samsca work?
Samsca works by increasing the amount of urine produced by the body so that the body is relieved from extra water.
How to use Samsca
Samsca should be taken in the manner prescribed by the doctor. Taking it for longer period or in larger amount than recommended can cause health problems.
The drug is usually taken once daily or as directed by the doctor. It can be taken with or without food. Drink water whenever you are thirsty or at the time suggested by the doctor in order to avoid getting dehydrated. Remember to take the medicine at the same time each day.
Samsca warnings and precautions
Do not use Samsca if you are allergic to tolvaptan or if you have urination problems.
Prior to taking the medicine, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if it consists of severe liver disease (such as cirrhosis), malnourishment or alcohol abuse. You might need an adjustment in the dosage.
Avoid consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice while you are on the prescription period of this medication.
Pregnant women should not use this drug without consulting their doctors. Even lactating mothers are advised not to consume this medication without seeking prior permission from their doctors. If you plan to conceive or become pregnant during the treatment, tell your doctor right away.
What do I do if I have missed a Samsca dose?
If you have missed your Samsca dose you can take the missed dose as soon as you remember but do not take it if it is time for your next dose.
What do I do if I have taken a Samsca overdose?
If you have taken an overdose of Samsca, you should seek medical attention immediately.
Samsca interactions
Do not take Samsca if you are taking conivaptan (Vaprisol), antibiotics, antifungal medications, antidepressants, heart or blood pressure medicines, or HIV/ AIDS medicine.
Before taking Samsca, consult your doctor if you are taking digoxin, rifabutin, rifampin, rifapentine, cyclosporine, aprepitant (Emend), St. John’s wort, birth control medicines, barbiturates, diuretics (water pills), potassium supplements or seizure medications. Such drugs can interact with Samsca.
Tell your doctor about all prescription and non prescription drugs that you use, including herbal products, mineral and vitamin supplements that you may be taking. Also, do not start taking any medicine without consulting your doctor.
Samsca side effects
Samsca side effects include hives, breathing trouble, weakness, fainting, bloody or tarry stools that are dark in color, and other allergic reactions. You may also experience symptoms of hyponatremia, such as swallowing trouble, mood changes, seizure, difficulty while moving your legs or arms, and problems with speech and/or muscle control. If you get any of these side effects after using Samsca, contact your doctor right away.
Increased thirst and urination, dry mouth, appetite loss, constipation, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting and fruity breath odor are some less serious side effects of Samsca.
