Razadyne

What is Razadyne ER?

Razadyne ER (galantamine) is reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor.

What is Razadyne ER used for?

Razadyne ER is used in the treatment of mild to moderate dementia which occurs as a result of Alzheimer’s disease. Though it does not completely cure Alzheimer’s disease it improves memory and awareness and betters ability to carry out daily functions.

How does Razadyne ER work?

Razadyne ER is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It inhibits the process of acetylcholine breakdown in the brain. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter found in the nerve cells of the brain and is essential to the processes of thinking, reasoning and memory. Patients suffering from dementia have low levels of acetylcholine. By preventing further breakdown of this chemical Razadyne ER improves the condition of such patients.

How to use Razadyne ER

Razadyne ER should be used in the manner prescribed by a doctor. Taking the medicine in larger amount or for longer period of time than prescribed may prove to be harmful. The dosage depends on your medical condition and response to treatment.

Razadyne ER is usually taken orally once or twice a day, with or without food. The extended-release capsules should be swallowed whole and not opened, crushed or chewed.

For the liquid form of the medicine the dose needs to be measured correctly with a measuring device provided by your pharmacist and mixed with 3-4 ounces of any non-alcoholic beverage. The mixture should be taken right away and should not be kept for later use.

Do not increase or stop your dose unless otherwise directed by your doctor. However, if your condition does not improve at all or becomes worse consult your doctor immediately.

Razadyne ER warnings and precautions

Razadyne ER is not administered to patients who are allergic to galantamine.

Before taking the medication, inform your doctor about your medical conditions, especially if you are allergic to any other medication or have any of the following conditions: a history of asthma, obstructive pulmonary diseases, stomach ulcer, heart diseases, seizure, kidney or liver diseases, or urination problems.

Razadyne ER may cause dizziness. Therefore, avoid activities which require alertness or clear vision while/ after taking this drug.

Razadyne ER is not expected to have harmful effects on a fetus. However, it is not known if it passes through breast milk. Hence pregnant and lactating women are advised to discuss the possible risks and benefits of taking the drug with their doctors. Also inform your doctor before you plan a pregnancy during treatment.

What do I do if I have missed a Razadyne ER dose?

If you have missed a Razadyne ER dose, take it as soon as you remember. If, however, it is almost time for the next dose, the missed dose can be skipped. Do not take a double dose.
