What is Pyoben?

Pyoben medicated shampoo is a keratolytic and follicular flushing shampoo with anitimicrobial properties. This shampoo can be used on dogs, cats, or horses of all ages. Pyoben medicated shampoo is for the treatment of skin disorders including infectious dermatitis, allergic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, keratoseborrheic disorders, and otitis externa. It is also used as a topical treatment for deep cutaenous infections. The active ingredient in Pyoben shampoo is 3% benzoyl peroxide (antiseptic, keratolytic). Benzoyl peroxide is an antibacterial agent and promotes drying and peeling of the skin. There are two characteristics of Pyoben shampoo that make it effective. The first is the use of spherulites (an exclusive encapsulation system that was developed and patented by the shampoo's manufacturer; it provides an extended release of the ingredients post aplication). The second is the use of chitosanide (a natural biopolymer creating a film on the skin and hair, protecting against environmental damage). In addition to benzoyl peroxide, Pyoben medicated shampoo also contains the following ingredients: purified water, sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate, Spherulites, carbomer, glycerin, citric acid, and chitosanide. Glycerin and chitosanide are found in the shampoo in both encapsulated and nonencapsulated forms. Urea is found only in an encapsulated form.

How to use Pyoben

Shake well before application. Apply to a wet coat. Use enough Pyoben medicated shampoo to generate a rich lather while massaging into the skin. Rinse and repeat. Leave the second application on 5-10 minutes before rinsing well with clean, warm water. Use 2-5 times a week for a month, then reduce use to once a week. Or, use the shampoo as your veterinarian indicates.

Pyoben warnings and precautions

Pyoben medicated shampoo is for topical use only. Do not ingest. Avoid contact with eyes. If improvement is not seen in 3-4 uses, discontinue use and re-evaluate the diagnosis. The use of Pyoben shampoo does not eliminate the possibility of also needing the appropriate adjunctive therapy in cases of dermatitis that is secondary to other causes.

What do I do if I have missed a Pyoben dose?

Use as directed. If irritation occurs, stop use until irritation disappears. Then, continue use with a diluted-strength dose of the shampoo.

Pyoben interactions

Ensure your veterinarian knows all medications being given to your animal before starting use of this medicated shampoo.

Pyoben side effects

It is possible for the skin to become irritated. If the skin seems irritated, discontinue use. Once the irritation fades, restart use with diluted strength shampoo and/or reduced exposure time.
