What is Protelos?

Protelos is a bone strengthening medicine whose active ingredient is strontium ranelate.

What is Protelos used for?

Protelos is indicated for providing relief from postmenopausal osteoporosis. It is also used to stimulate the formation of new bones by osteoblasts.

How does Protelos work?

Protelos contains strontium ranelate that binds the bone and prevents the calcium from being displaced by osteoclasts due to lesser production of oestrogen by the post menopausal body. This stops them from breaking the bone.

How to use Protelos

Take Protelos as per the instructions of the doctor.

Dissolve Protelos granules in water before taking it. Take the Protelos suspension on an empty stomach at bedtime or at least two hours after taking food or milk (and its products) or calcium supplements.

Protelos warnings and precautions

Do not take Protelos if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

Use with caution if you have suffered from severely decreased kidney function, deep vein thrombosis, antiphospholipid syndrome, factor V Leiden or phenylketonuria.

Tell your doctor if you have just had a surgery or will have one in the near future and will remain immobile hence for a long period.

Do not give Protelos to children.

Pregnant women must not take this medicine unless recommended by the doctor. Nursing mothers are also advised to not take Protelos as it is known to pass through the breast milk and harm the nursing child.

What do I do if I have missed a Protelos dose?

If you have missed a dose of Protelos, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule.

What do I do if I have taken a Protelos overdose?

If you have taken an overdose of Protelos, contact your doctor.

Protelos interactions

It is very important to know what medicines can interact with Protelos. Calcium supplements, multivitamins, antacids etc. must be avoided while you are under this medication.

Tetracycline antibiotics like tetracycline, minocycline, doxycycline; quinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin and nalidixic acid are some of the other medicines that can have their efficacy reduced when used in tandem with Protelos.

Tell your doctor about all the prescribed and non prescribed drugs, herbal medicines, and mineral and vitamin supplements that you are taking or intend to take while you are under the medication of Protelos. This will help you doctor prescribe the dose that will benefit you in the best manner, given your current medical condition.

It will also help in reducing drug interaction as the doctor will lower the dosage of another medicine or increase the dosage accordingly to avoid any interaction at all.

Protelos side effects

Medicines are known to have some side effect or other but it is not necessary that all side effects are experienced at once by everybody. Medicine reaction differs from person-to-person. Carefully keep a note of any discrepancy that comes your way after taking the medicine and report to the doctor.

Get medical help if you experience side effects of Protelos like hives, skin rash, itching, swollen glands, difficulty in breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat.

Protelos side effects like nausea, vomiting, uneasiness, diarrhea, severe headache, eczema, sore mouth, abdominal pain are common. However, do not ignore their persistence.

Discontinue Protelos immediately and call the doctor when you notice stabbing pain and swelling in the leg, have difficulty in breathing or even swallowing, or if you cough up blood.
