What is Propecia?
Propecia (finasteride) is a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound. It is a specific inhibitor of steroid Type II 5(alpha)-reductase which is an intracellular enzyme. The drug prevents conversion of androgen testosterone into 5(alpha)-dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
What is Propecia used for?
Propecia is indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss on the vertex and anterior mid-scalp area. The medication is to be used by men only and should never be used by women or children. Male pattern hair loss is a condition wherein men experience receding hairline, thinning of hair on the scalp and/or balding on top of the head.
How does Propecia work?
Propecia (Finasteride) works by reducing the amount of DHT or dihydrotestosterone. This helps reduce DHT’s harmful effect on hair follicles and results in increased hair growth, re-growth and slower hair loss.
How to use Propecia
Propecia should be taken in the manner prescribed by the doctor. Taking it for longer periods or in larger amounts than recommended can cause health problems.
Propecia is usually taken with a full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food. Remember to take the medicine at the same time each day. The drug may take 3 months or more before it starts showing results.
Do not stop taking the drug else you may lose hair that you’ve gained during treatment.
