What is Plavix?

Plavix is an inhibitor of platelet aggregation induced by ADP (Adenosine Diphosphate). It keeps the blood platelets from sticking together and forming clots. Thus, it prevents blood clots that may occur in people with certain heart or blood vessel conditions.

What is Plavix used for?

Plavix is used to prevent blood clots in heart patients. It also prevents blood clots from occurring in people with certain disorders of blood vessels. The drug is suitable for patients with acute coronary syndrome.

How does Plavix work?

Plavix is often referred to as blood thinning medicine. The tablet stops platelets from forming blood clots. It makes it easier for the person to bleed, even if it is a minor injury. It contains Clopidogrel Hydrogen Sulphate which is sometimes called anti-platelet. Clopidogrel works by preventing ADP (Adenosine Diphosphate) from binding to its receptors. This is because ADP causes platelets to stick together and form blood clots.

How to use Plavix

Plavix can be taken once daily. It is advisable to follow the instructions of your physician. The medicine is taken orally with or without food. Use this medication regularly in order to get the maximum benefits from it. Remember to use it at the same time each day.

Plavix warnings and precautions

Plavix prolongs the bleeding time. It should be used with care in patients with an increased risk of bleeding from surgery, trauma, or other pathological conditions (especially in the stomach or intestines).

Avoid alcohol while using the drug. Lactating mothers should not use it without consulting the doctor. Avoid sports or activities as they can result in a bleeding injury. Be extra cautious while brushing your teeth or shaving to avoid cuts.

What do I do if I have missed a Plavix dose?

If you have missed your Plavix dose you should take it as soon as you remember.

What do I do if I have taken a Plavix overdose?

A plavix overdose may lead to prolonged bleeding. If you have taken a Plavix overdose you should immediately consult a doctor.

Plavix interactions

While taking Plavix, it is advisable not to take aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) without consulting the doctor. NSAIDs include ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), diclofenac (Voltaren), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn), diflunisal (Dolobid), flurbiprofen (Ansaid), indomethacin (Indocin), etodolac (Lodine), ketoprofen (Orudis), mefenamic acid (Ponstel), ketorolac (Toradol), meloxicam (Mobic), piroxicam (Feldene), nabumetone (Relafen), and others. This may result in some serious health problems like gastrointestinal blood loss, lowered body metabolism, etc
