What is Patanase?

Patanase is an H1-receptor antagonist with generic name olopatadine hydrochloride. This drug is an anti-histamine.

What is Patanase used for?

Patanase is indicated for the treatment of symptoms of nasal allergies like sneezing, itching and runny nose. It also fights against signs of seasonal allergic rhinitis in adults or children above the age of 6.

How does Patanase work?

Patanase works against histamines, a chemical substance released in the body that causes allergies. It blocks them and, hence, reduces allergic reactions.

How to use Patanase

Before using the spray, blow your nose properly. Sit down in a comfortable posture with your head bent backwards. Place the spray tip in your nose and with the help of the other hand, press the other nostril. Pressing the spray, breathe through the open nostril and blow the air in.

When spraying it more than once, kindly wait for a minute or so before using it again.

Patanase warnings and precautions

When using this nasal spray for the first time, kindly spray it at least five times in the air, until a fine mist is formed. Be cautious to not to spray it in your eyes or mouth. Wash or rinse with cool water, if it comes in contact with the eyes.

Patanase is said to cause drowsiness and the effect can augment, if taken with alcohol. Consult your doctor or pharmacist, in case of any doubts. Also, do not take Patanase in heavy doses; follow the instructions of the doctor or the manual enclosed within.

Whenever you plan to take some other medicine, just see if it too has anti-histamine as an ingredient. Consult your doctor about the same to avoid trouble.

As the safety and usage of Patanase has yet not been verified, therefore, extreme care should be maintained, when dealing with children below the age of 6.

Pregnant women or women who are planning pregnancy, should check with the doctor. Lactating women must discuss with the doctor regarding the risks involved for infants.

What do I do if I have missed a Patanase dose?

If you have missed your Patanase dose, you should take it just as you remember. However, if it’s time for the next dose, then skip it and get back to the routine.

What do I do if I have taken a Patanase overdose?

If you have taken a Patanase overdose, you should immediately call the poison control centre or contact your doctor.

Patanase interactions

Patanase spray gets absorbed in the blood and there is little chance of its reaction with any other medicine. Also, olopatadine is purged by the body through renal excretions.

But it won’t be right enough to say that Patanase does not interact with other drugs, so it is advised to check with your doctor before you start, stop or alter your dose. Also, inform your doctor about all other prescription and non prescription drugs that you use, before starting to take this medicine.

The anti-seizure drugs, medicines for sleep and anxiety, psychiatric medicines, muscle relievers or narcotic pain relaxants can have constituents that cause drowsiness.

Patanase side effects

Very serious side effects of Patanase have not been discovered as yet, but there are some minor side effects that the taker may face.  If you experience allergic reactions like swelling, difficulty in breathing, hives, etc. you must stop the dosage and have a talk with the physician.

Some grave side effects of Patanase include, sores inside nose, nose bleeding, burns while urinating, and if you feel that the problem is growing, you must instantly consult your doctor.

After taking Patanase, you might even come across some minor consequences like dry mouth, headache, drowsiness, weight gain, cough, diarrhea, nausea, stomach ache, etc. Seek medical aid, if problem persists.
