What is Optimmune?
Optimmune is an ophthalmic ointment for veterinary use.
What is Optimmune used for?
Optimmune is indicated for the management of chronic superficial keratitis (CSK) and chronic keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) in dogs.
How does Optimmune work?
Optimmune acts as a local immunomodulator of diseases that are supposed to be immune-mediated. The exact process of how does the drug work is, however, not known.
How to use Optimmune
Before using Optimmune, make sure that the debris is removed with appropriate non-irritating solutions, after which a ¼ inch strip of the ointment is to be applied to the affected eye(s) every 12 hours. It may be applied onto the cornea directly or into conjunctival sac.
Dogs exhibiting chronic recurring conjunctivitis should be tested for adequate tear production in order to determine if the dogs are suffering from chronic KCS’ early stages.
Optimmune warnings and precautions
The clinical effects of this medication have not been determined in dogs with keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) due to certain conditions such as canine distemper virus, congenital alacrima, metabolic disease, sulfonamide usage, surgical removal of the third eyelid gland, and facial nerve paralysis with loss of palpebral reflex.
What do I do if I have missed a Optimmune dose?
If you have missed giving your dog their Optimmune dose you should give it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, just skip the missed dose and continue with the regular scheduled dose. You may also wish to contact your veterinarian for advise.
