What is Ocufen Eye Drops?
Ocufen eye drops belong to a group of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
What is Ocufen Eye Drops used for?
Ocufen is generally used prior to certain types of eye surgeries including cataract removal. It keeps the pupil from narrowing/ constricting, during eye surgery.
How does Ocufen Eye Drops work?
Ocufen eye drops work by decreasing the pain and inflammation causing hormones in the body.
How to use Ocufen Eye Drops
Ocufen eye drops should be used in the affected eye two hours before the surgery begins. Usually, it is recommended to use 4 drops of medication every 30 minutes starting from two hours prior to surgery or as suggested by the doctor. While using the medication, you should not be wearing contact lenses.
Shake the bottle well before use. Wash your hands properly before using Ocufen eye drops.
To apply the eye drops, follow the steps mentioned below:
- Tilt your head back slightly.
- Pull down the lower eyelid
- Hold the eye dropper above the eye. Make sure that the dropper is tipped down.
- Look up. Don’t look into the dropper, look away from it.
- Squeeze out one drop and close your eye.
- Press your fore-finger gently to the inside corner of the eye (near the nose). Do it for about a minute to prevent the liquid from draining into your tear duct.
- Replace the dropper cap after each use.
- Wait for at least 10 minutes before using any other prescribed medications.
Ocufen Eye Drops warnings and precautions
Do not use this product if you are allergic to the medicine, aspirin or other NSAIDs like ibuprofen or celecoxib. It is advisable to explain your entire medical history to the doctor before he starts the treatment especially if you have asthma that leads to stuffy nose, bleeding or clotting problems, eye problems like dry eye syndrome, cornea problems or past eye surgeries, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes.
Do not engage in any such activity that requires clear vision like driving or using machinery. Do not use the product if it turns contaminated. In case you use contact lens, consult the doctor before you start wearing then again after the surgery.
The medication is meant for short term usage. In the event of being used more often it can lead to serious side effects.
The medication is not to be used by pregnant females. Lactating women should not use Ocufen without consulting their doctors.
What do I do if I have missed a Ocufen Eye Drops dose?
If you have missed your Ocufen dose, use it as soon as you remember or skip the missed dose and use it at the time of your next dose. Do not take an extra dose.
What do I do if I have taken a Ocufen Eye Drops overdose?
If you have taken an overdose of Ocufen, you should seek medical attention.
Ocufen Eye Drops interactions
Before starting the Ocufen medication, inform the health care provider about prescribed, non prescribed and herbal dosages that you are on. The effects of some of the drugs may change when taken along with Ocufen.
Consult your doctor in case you take blood thinners such as warfarin/heparin or antiplatelet drugs such as clopidogrel. Medications that contain fever reducers or pain relievers such as NSAIDs or Asprin may lead to increased bleeding if used along with Ocufen.
Also, do not start taking any new medication without consulting your doctor.

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience side effects of Ocufen like eye pain, bleeding in the eye, increased redness in the eye, or decreased vision.
If you experience any unusual symptoms after using Ocufen eye drops, call your doctor.
