What is Naprosyn SR?

Naprosyn belongs to a class of drugs known as non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).


What is Naprosyn SR used for?

Naprosyn is indicated for the treatment of the inflammation in the body caused by arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis, gout, ankylosing spondilytis, or menstrual cramps.


How does Naprosyn SR work?

Naprosyn works by lessening the number/ amount of inflammation causing hormones in the body.


How to use Naprosyn SR

Take Naprosyn exactly as directed on the label, or as it has been prescribed by your doctor. Do not use Naprosyn in larger amounts or for longer period than recommended by the doctor.

Take the tablet orally with a full glass of water. Do not crush, chew or break the tablet. Swallow it whole. If you are taking the liquid form of the medicine, measure it using a special dose measuring device made available to you.


Naprosyn SR warnings and precautions

Do not use Naprosyn if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, aspirin or other NSAIDs. Do not use Naprosyn immediately before or after a heart bypass surgery (or coronary artery bypass graft/ CABG)

If you are suffering from congestive heart failure, asthma, nose polyps, history of heart attack, stroke, blood clot; high blood pressure, heart disease, stomach ulcers, bleeding in the stomach, kidney or liver disease, consult your doctor and have the dose altered to suit your medical condition.

Avoid smoking and drinking while you are under this medication. Also, do not expose your skin to harsh lighting as Naprosyn makes it hypersensitive to such lighting.

Pregnant and lactating women are advised to not use this medicine as it may cause birth defects in the child or harm a nursing child as it is known to pass through the breast milk.

Do not give Naprosyn to a child who is less than 2 years of age.


What do I do if I have missed a Naprosyn SR dose?

If you have missed a Naprosyn dose, take it as soon as you remember and skip the missed dose if it is time for the next dose.


What do I do if I have taken a Naprosyn SR overdose?

If you have taken a Naprosyn overdose, you should contact your doctor immediately.


Naprosyn SR interactions

Inform your doctor if you are taking antidepressants like citalopram, duloxetine, escitalopram, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, sertraline, venlafaxine. Using these with Naprosyn may cause you to bruise or bleed.

Tell your doctor especially about the use of warfarin (Coumadin), lithium, Methotrexate, diuretics, steroids, aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, Diclofenac, Indomethacin, meloxicam, piroxicam; or ACE inhibitors such as benazepril, captopril, fosinopril, enalapril , lisinopril, ramipril etc.

Do not use any other medicine for cold, allergy or pain, without first asking your doctor.


Naprosyn SR side effects

Get urgent medical help if you experience hives, breathing trouble, and swelling on the lips, face, tongue or throat. These serious side effects of Naprosyn must be given immediate attention.

Stop taking Naprosyn and seek medical attention if you have any of these serious side effects from Naprosyn: chest pain, feeling short of breath, problems with balance or vision, bloody or tarry stools, slurred speech, coughing up blood, rapid weight gain, nausea, stomach ache, loss of appetite, dark urine and stools, jaundice, sore throat, fever, headache, skin rash, severe tingling, bruising, numbness, pain, neck stiffness, increased sensitivity to light, and purple spots on the skin.

Less serious Naprosyn side effects may include upset stomach, constipation, diarrhea, mild heartburn, bloating, gas, stomach ache, skin itching, headache, dizziness, blurred vision, nervousness, or ringing in the ears.
