What is Minitran?
Minitran (nitroglycerin transdermal) belongs to a class of drugs called nitrates.
What is Minitran used for?
Minitran is indicated for the prevention of angina/ chest pain in people with certain heart condition (coronary artery disease). However, it is to be noted that the medicine does not treat a chest pain that has already occurred.
The medicine is used just before physical activities (exercises or sexual activity).
How does Minitran work?
Angina occurs when heart muscles do not get enough blood. Minitran works by relaxing and widening blood vessels so that blood can flow easily to the heart.
How to use Minitran
Follow your doctor’s instructions wisely. Remove the patch and peel off the protective clear liner as directed. You can wear the patch anywhere on your body - below the neck or above the knees, but it is advised that you wear it on the upper arm or chest. Apply the patch to a hairless, clean and dry area. Avoid areas with cuts or irritation. Apply Minitran patch only when your skin is completely dry.
Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to the treatment. Do not stop the medicine without consulting your doctor because it may lead to side effects.
Minitran warnings and precautions
Do not use Minitran if you are allergic to nitroglycerin, isosorbide mononitrate or isosorbide dinitrate. Also Minitran should not be used if you are suffering from low blood pressure, dehydration, anemia or other heart problems or if you have had a head injury recently.
If you are going for MRI with your patch it may cause you serious burns. Hence consult your doctor beforehand. Pregnant and lactating women should consult their doctors before using Minitran patch.
What do I do if I have missed a Minitran dose?
If you have missed a Minitran dose, you can apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is already time to apply the next patch, skip the missed dose and apply it when the next patch is scheduled.
What do I do if I have taken a Minitran overdose?
If you have taken an overdose of Minitran, you should seek medical help right away.
Minitran interactions
Before taking Minitran, tell your doctor about all the medicines that you are on, especially if you are taking drugs to treat erectile dysfunction like sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenfil because these may cause very serious interaction. Also inform your doctor if you are using certain drugs to treat migraine, drugs that reduce blood pressure or alpha blockers like tamsulosin.
Minitran side effects
Minitran side effects include fainting, fast or irregular heartbeat, allergic reaction like rash, itching, swelling on the face, throat; severe dizziness and breathing trouble. Do tell your doctor immediately if any of these symptoms are seen.
Less serious side effects from Minitran may include nausea, headache, dizziness and lightheadedness. Do contact your doctor if any of these problems persist.
