What is Metrogel?

Metrogel (metronidazole) is an antibiotic that is active against bacterial infections in the body. The medicine also contains sunscreens.


What is Metrogel used for?

Metrogel is indicated for the treatment of skin lesions/ disorders caused by rosacea. The medicine is usually used to reduce the swelling, redness, and number of pimples caused by rosacea.


How does Metrogel work?

Metrogel works by reducing the swelling or inflammation on the skin.


How to use Metrogel

Metrogel should be used in the manner prescribed by the doctor. Using it for longer periods or in larger amounts than recommended may increase side effects.

Before applying the medicine, wash your hands and gently clean the affected area of the skin with a mild skin cleanser. After washing, pat your skin dry. Do not apply Metrogel to wet skin as it may cause skin irritation.

Wait for 15 minutes and then apply a thin layer of this medicine. The medicine is usually used once or twice daily. You may use cosmetics on the treated area, after applying this medication. However, it is advised that you wait for at least 5 minutes before applying cosmetics on the area where the medicine has been applied. Remember to apply the medicine at the same time each day.


Metrogel warnings and precautions

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to it. Prior to using this topical medication, inform your doctor if you have a blood cell disorder (anemia) or reduced WBCs (white blood cells). You might need special tests to be done before being prescribed this medicine or some dose adjustment in order to make sure that the body responds effectively to the medicine.

Avoid using Metrogel around the eyes. In case it gets into the eyes, rinse thoroughly with large amounts of cold water. Also, the medicine is not to be used in the vagina.

It is not known if the drug could harm a fetus, therefore, pregnant females should consult their doctors before using Metrogel. If you plan to become pregnant, tell your doctor in advance so that he can adjust the dosage accordingly. Lactating women should not apply the medicine without consulting their doctors as it is known to pass through breast milk and could harm a nursing baby.


What do I do if I have missed a Metrogel dose?

If you have missed your Metrogel dose you can take it as soon as you remember but do not take it if it is time for your next dose.


What do I do if I have taken a Metrogel overdose?

Metrogel is not expected to cause overdose symptoms. However, if you have used too much of this medicine, you should seek medical attention.


Metrogel interactions

Before taking Metrogel, inform your doctor about all the prescribed and non prescribed dosages that you are on; especially if you are using blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin).

Do not start using any new medicine without consulting your doctor.


Metrogel side effects

Metrogel side effects may include burning or severe stinging. If you get any of these side effects after using Metrogel, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor.

Mild burning, swelling, numbness, tingling, irritation, headache, sore throat, cough or cold, scaly skin, itching, redness on the skin, vaginal discharge or itching, and metallic taste in the mouth are some less serious side effects of Metrogel.
