Mavik (Trandolapril)

What is Mavik?

Mavik belongs to a class of drugs called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.

What is Mavik used for?

Mavik is indicated for the treatment of hypertension or high blood pressure. Reducing high blood pressure further helps prevent heart attacks, strokes, and kidney problems. The medicine enhances the survival chances following a heart attack.

How does Mavik work?

Mavik works by relaxing the blood vessels and causing them to widen so as to allow the blood to flow into the heart easily.

How to use Mavik

Take Mavik the way it was prescribed by the doctor. Do not consume it for more than the recommended duration or quantity.

Mavik can be taken with or without food. Take Mavik at the same time every day for best results. Drink plenty of fluids while on the prescription period of this medicine.

Get your blood pressure checked on a regular basis. You may also be required to get your liver or kidney functions tested time to time. Therefore, do not miss any scheduled appointment to the doctor.

Mavik warnings and precautions

Do not take Mavik if you are allergic to trandolapril or other ACE inhibitors (such as fosinopril, enalapril, lisinopril, prinivil, etc).

Discuss with your doctor, before taking this medicine, if you have a medical history of kidney or liver disease, diabetes, congestive heart failure, any other heart disease, connective tissue disease like lupus, scleroderma, Marfan syndrome, Sjogren’s syndrome, or rheumatoid arthritis.

Do not take salt substitutes or potassium supplements along with this medication. Abstain from smoking and drinking alcohol as far as possible while you are under this medication.

Pregnant women should not take Mavik at all as it could harm an unborn baby. If you plan to become pregnant, tell your doctor in advance. You might need an adjustment in the dosage. The drug may pass through breast milk and could harm a nursing child; hence lactating females should not use this medicine unless prescribed by the doctor.

What do I do if I have missed a Mavik dose?

If you have missed a Mavik dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue the routine. Do not take an extra dose just to catch up.

What do I do if I have taken a Mavik overdose?

If you have taken an overdose of Mavik, contact your doctor.

Mavik interactions

Before consuming Mavik, tell your doctor about all prescription and non prescription drugs that you are using including vitamin and mineral supplements that you may be taking. You should especially inform your doctor if you take lithium, potassium supplements like K-Dur, Klor-Con, etc; diuretics or water pills, salt substitutes containing potassium, gold injections for the treatment of arthritis.

Also, do not start taking any new medicine, without consulting your doctor.

Mavik side effects

Common side effects from Mavik include light headedness, fever, chills, bruising, bleeding, body ache, fatigue, muscle weakness, chest pain, decreased urination, skin rashes, swelling, and weight gain. Inform your doctor immediately if any of these signs persist.

Cough, headache, drowsiness, dizziness, pain in the muscles, nausea, stomach upset, mild skin rash and itching, and insomnia (lack of sleep) are some less serious side effects of Mavik. These do not remain for a long time, but if they do, you should contact your doctor right away.
