What is Macrobid?
Macrobid is an antibacterial agent specific for urinary tract infections. This antibiotic helps treat acute cystitis (bladder infections).
What is Macrobid used for?
Macrobid is indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections especially in urinary bladder.
It is important to note that the medicine only treats bacterial infections and is not active against viral infections. Moreover, the medication should not be used to treat infections outside the bladder, such as kidney infections (perinephric abscesses or pyelonephritis).
How does Macrobid work?
Macrobid works by stopping the bacterial growth in the body.
How to use Macrobid
Use Macrobid in the manner prescribed by the doctor. Read the instruction leaflet very carefully before taking the drug. Do not take the medicine for longer period or in larger amount than prescribed.
The medicine is usually taken twice daily with a glass of water, food or milk. The medicine should be taken in whole for best results. Avoid taking Magnesium trisilicate antacids with Macrobid as it will lower its absorption.
The medication should be taken at evenly spaced intervals.

Although Macrobid is not expected to cause harm to a fetus, pregnant women should consult their doctors before taking this medicine. Lactating women should not take this medication as it is known to pass into breast milk and may even harm a nursing infant.
