What is Lariam used for?
Mefloquine is indicated for the prevention and treatment of malaria. Malaria is a disease caused by parasites. These parasites enter the body through a mosquito bite. The disease is common in South America, Africa and Southern Asia.
How does Lariam work?
Mefloquine works by interfering with the parasitic growth in the red blood cells (RBCs) of the human body.
How to use Lariam
Mefloquine should be taken as per the directions of the doctor. Taking it for longer duration or in larger amount than recommended can cause health problems.
Mefloquine is usually taken orally, once a week. If taking the medicine causes you upset stomach, it is advised that you take it with food or milk. It is recommended to take each dose with full glass of water. It is also suggested to take the medicine for a full prescription time to get the best results.
For children who cannot swallow the tablets whole, the tablet is crushed and placed in a small amount of water, milk or sugar water. The doctor will tell you the correct dose for your child.
Remember to take the medicine at the same time each day. You should not stop taking the medicine without doctor’s advice because it may lead to various side effects and withdrawal symptoms that may cause health problems.
Lariam warnings and precautions
Always consult your doctor before taking Mefloquine if you are allergic to quinine or quinidine, or to similar drugs.
Mefloquine should not be used if you have any of the following medical conditions: active or recent depression, anxiety disorder, psychiatric disorders, and seizure disorders. Before using Mefloquine inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if it consists of heart problems or liver problems.
Pregnant and lactating females should consult their doctors before taking this medication.
What do I do if I have missed a Lariam dose?
If you have missed a Mefloquine dose then have the medicine as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose then take your regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of the medication.
What do I do if I have taken a Lariam overdose?
If you have taken an overdose of Mefloquine, you should seek medical help immediately.
Lariam interactions
Before taking Mefloquine always let your doctor know about all your prior medicines and ongoing medicines. Some drugs can interact with Mefloquine if taken in tandem with it, for example quinidine, quinine, ziprasidone, artemether-lumefantrine, chloroquine, halofantrine or ketoconazole.
Till 15 weeks after your last dose of Mefloquine (mefloquine), you should not take halofantrine or ketoconazole. Do not start taking any new medicine without consulting your doctor.
Lariam side effects
Minor side effects of Mefloquine include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, hair loss, spinning sensation, loss of balance, drowsiness, headache, insomnia, strange dreams, or lightheadedness.
Serious side effects from Mefloquine like fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; seizures, muscle pain, loss of coordination, or vision changes may occur. If you experience any of these side effects after taking Mefloquine dose, contact doctor immediately.
