What is Hectorol?

Hectorol (doxercalciferol) is a synthetic form of Vitamin D. Vitamin D facilitates absorption of calcium from stomach and for functioning of calcium in the body.

What is Hectorol used for?

Hectorol is used to lower high levels of parathyroid hormone-PTH (a naturally occurring substance) in patients with serious kidney diseases. High PTH levels in the body can cause imbalance of minerals such as calcium and phosphorus and eventually may lead to weak bones.

How does Hectorol work?

Hectorol is a synthetic form of Vitamin D that controls absorption of dietary calcium, re-absorption of calcium by kidneys and mobilization of calcium from the skeleton. It acts on osteoblasts (bone cells) and stimulates skeletal growth. It also suppresses PTH synthesis and secretion. It is useful in treating hyperparathyroidism in patients with a chronic kidney disease, as in such patients the body fails to produce sufficient amount of biologically active Vitamin D metabolites.

How to use Hectorol

Hectorol should be used in the manner prescribed by a doctor. Taking the medicine in larger amounts or for longer period than prescribed is not desirable. The dosage depends on your medical condition and response to treatment.

Hectorol is usually taken orally with a glass of water. If you are undergoing dialysis, the dose, generally, is thrice a day.

Do not change or stop your dose unless otherwise directed by your doctor. However, if your condition does not improve at all or becomes worse consult your doctor immediately.

Hectorol warnings and precautions

Hectorol is not administered to patients who are allergic to it or have high levels of Vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus.

Before taking the medication, inform your doctor about your medical conditions, especially if you have a liver disease. In such cases there may be a dose adjustment and your liver functions will be monitored on a regular basis.

You should not take magnesium-containing antacids while taking this medicine.

Hectorol is not expected to cause harm to a fetus. But it is believed to pass through breast milk and can affect a nursing baby. Therefore, pregnant and lactating women are advised to discuss the possible risks and benefits of taking the drug with their doctors.

What do I do if I have missed a Hectorol dose?

If you have missed a Hectorol dose, take it as soon as you remember. If, however, it is almost time for the next dose, the missed dose can be skipped. Do not take a double dose.

What do I do if I have taken a Hectorol overdose?

If you have taken an overdose of Hectorol, seek medical attention right away.

Hectorol interactions

Some drugs which may interact with Hectorol are: digoxin, cholestyramine, antacids (especially those containing magnesium), mineral oils or other Vitamin D supplements.

Other drugs may also interact with Hectorol. Hence it is necessary to inform your doctor about all the prescription/non prescription drugs/herbal medicines that you are taking, before using this medicine.

You should not start taking any new medicine, without consulting your doctor.
