What is Flovent Diskus?

Flovent (Fluticasone Propionate Inhalation) is an inhaled corticosteroid.


What is Flovent Diskus used for?

Flovent is indicated for the prevention of bronchial asthma attacks. It is also used to prevent wheezing and shortness of breath caused by bronchitis, asthma and certain kinds of emphysema.


How does Flovent Diskus work?

Flovent works by reducing inflammatory reactions in airways and thus making breathing process easier.


How to use Flovent Diskus

Flovent should be taken in the manner prescribed by the doctor. Taking it for longer periods or in larger amounts than recommended can cause health problems.

The medicine is inhaled by mouth, usually twice daily. Remember to take it at the same time each day. Before each spray, shake the inhaler for at least 5 seconds. Do not use the medicine with a spacer. Also never exhale into the device. Rinse mouth or gargle after taking the medicine.

If you use two inhalers, keep a gap of at least one minute before taking the second inhalation or puff.


Flovent Diskus warnings and precautions

Do not use this drug if you are allergic to fluticasone. Prior to taking Flovent, tell your doctor if you have had an infection of any kind in the past or if you have been sick for quite a long time.

Avoid being close to people who are sick or have infections. If you get exposed to chicken pox or measles, contact your doctor right away as the condition may be fatal.

Do not give this medicine to children below the age of 4 years as this can affect their growth.

It is not known whether the drug could harm an unborn child or passes into breast milk. Therefore, pregnant and lactating women should not use this drug without consulting their doctors.


What do I do if I have missed a Flovent Diskus dose?

If you have missed your Flovent dose, you can take the missed dose as soon as you remember but do not take it if it is time for your next (scheduled) dose.


What do I do if I have taken a Flovent Diskus overdose?

An overdose of Flovent does not produce serious consequences. However, if you have taken a Flovent overdose you should seek medical attention.


Flovent Diskus interactions

Before taking Flovent, consult your doctor if you are taking drugs like isoniazid (for treatment of tuberculosis), conivaptan (Vaprisol), diclofenac (Cataflam, Arthrotec, Voltaren, Solareze, Flector Patch), imatinib (Gleevec); HIV medicines such as ritonavir (Norvir), atazanavir (Reyataz), indinavir (Crixivan), saquinavir (Fortovase, Invirase), amprenavir (Agenerase), fosamprenavir (Lexiva), delavirdine (Rescriptor) or nelfinavir (Viracept); an antidepressant such as nefazodone; antibiotics such as telithromycin (Ketek), erythromycin (Erythrocin, E.E.S., Ery-Tab, EryPed), dalfopristin/quinupristin (Synercid) or clarithromycin (Biaxin); heart or blood pressure medicines such as quinidine (Quinidex, Quinaglute, Quin-Release), diltiazem (Dilacor, Cardizem, Tiazac), verapamil (Covera, Calan, Verelan, Isoptin) or nicardipine (Cardene); and antifungal medications such as ketoconazole (Nizoral), voriconazole (Vfend), clotrimazole (Mycelex Troche) or itraconazole (Sporanox).

Flovent Diskus side effects

Flovent side effects include hives; breathing difficulty; swelling of face, tongue, lips or throat; and other allergic reactions. If you get any of these side effects after using Flovent, contact your doctor.

Wheezing, breathing troubles, fever, chills, pain in eyes or ears, sore throat, skin rash, numbness, muscle weakness, severe tingling, bruising, blurred vision, seeing halos around lights, nausea, vomiting, tired feeling, or worsening asthma symptoms are also side effects from Flovent.

Sinus pain, stuffy nose, cough, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, hoarseness, white patches or sores in mouth or on lips are some less serious side effects of Flovent.
