What is Flagyl?
Flagyl is an oral antibacterial and antiprotozoal antibiotic that belongs to a class of antibiotics called nitroimidazoles.
What is Flagyl used for?
Flagyl is used to treat infections in the body which are caused by amoeba or bacteria. Such infections can be of skin, joints, vagina, stomach or respiratory tract.
It is to be noted that the medicine only fights bacterial infections and does not work for viral infections (e.g., common cold or flu).
How does Flagyl work?
Flagyl works by stopping the growth of bacteria and protozoa in the body.
How to use Flagyl
Use Flagyl in the manner prescribed by the doctor. Read the instruction leaflet very carefully before taking the drug. Do not take the medicine for longer period or in larger amount than prescribed.
The medicine may be taken with food or full glass of water or milk in order to prevent upset stomach.
The extended release tablets are usually taken 1 hour before the meal or 2 hours after the meals. The pill should be swallowed as whole rather than the tablet being crushed, broken or chewed.
It is recommended that you take the medicine at evenly spaced intervals.
Flagyl warnings and precautions
Do not take Flagyl if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or if you have any other allergy. The medication may contain certain ingredients which are inactive and may cause allergic reactions or other problems.
Before using Flagyl share your medical history with your doctor, especially if it consists of liver problems, blood cell disorders (e.g., anemia or leucopenia), stomach or intestinal disorder, or nerve disorder.
Alcohol should not be taken while you are taking this medication and for at least 3 days after you have stopped taking the medicine. As consuming Flagyl can create dizziness, any activity that requires alertness such as driving should be avoided.
Pregnant and lactating women should not take this medication, unless prescribed by a registered medical practitioner.
What do I do if I have missed a Flagyl dose?
If you have missed a Flagyl dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue the routine.
What do I do if I have taken a Flagyl overdose?
If you have taken an overdose of Flagyl, consult your doctor right away.
Flagyl interactions
Some drugs are known to interact with Flagyl when used in tandem with it. These include blood thinner like warfarin (Coumadin), cimetidine, lithium, disulfiram, and seizure medication. Flagyl may not be used with any of these drugs or there should be a modification in the dosing schedule.
The doctor shall be informed of any kind of medication that the patient is already taking in order to avert any interference with the treatment.
Do not start taking any new medicine on your own, that is to say, without consulting your doctor.
Flagyl side effects
Side effects from Flagyl include chills, fever, flu symptoms, numbness particularly of feet or hands, pain while urinating, body ache, sore throat, sores in mouth or lips, diarrhea, and seizures. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should contact your doctor immediately.
Headache, itching in vagina, vaginal discharge, dryness in mouth, sneezing, cough, stuffy nose, dizziness, stomach pain, nausea, headache, loss of balance or swollen tongue are some less serious side effects of Flagyl.
