What is Eucreas?

Eucreas is an anti-diabetic medicine that is a combination of two drugs, metformin and vildagliptin.

What is Eucreas used for?

Eucreas is indicated for the treatment of type2 (non insulin dependent) diabetes. The medicine is used when metformin (when used alone), or vildaglipitin and metformin when taken together but as separate tablets fail to treat the patient’s diabetes.

How does Eucreas work?

One of the active ingredients in Eucreas, Vildaglipitin works by blocking breakdown of incretin hormones in the body, which are released after a meal. This makes the pancreas produce insulin when the glucose levels are high. It is to be noted that Vildagliptin does not work when the glucose levels in the blood are low.

The other ingredient, metformin works by inhibiting production of glucose and decreasing its absorption in the gut.

The combined effect of both the medicines helps control type2 diabetes.

How to use Eucreas

Use Eucreas in the manner prescribed by the doctor. Read the instruction leaflet carefully before taking the drug. Do not take the medicine for longer period or in larger amount than prescribed.

The medicine is usually taken twice daily (in the morning and evening). Patients who are already on metformin and Vildagliptin doses should switch to Eucreas containing the same amounts of each ingredient. If you experience stomach problems after taking the medicine on an empty stomach, it is advised that you take it just after meal.

Get your blood tested on a regular basis, while you are on the dosing schedule of this medicine.

Eucreas warnings and precautions

Do not take Eucreas if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or if you have moderate to severe kidney problems or liver problems. It is important to inform your doctor about your medical history, prior to taking this medication.

Eucreas should be used with caution in individuals aged above 75 years as they are more sensitive to the medicine and may have lowered blood sugar levels. Therefore, it is advisable that you contact a doctor, in such a case.

Pregnant and lactating women are advised to take Eucreas only after taking doctor’s permission.

What do I do if I have missed a Eucreas dose?

If you have missed a Eucreas dose, you should take it as soon as you remember.  However, if it is almost time for you next dose you should not take the dose and continue with your regular schedule.

What do I do if I have taken a Eucreas overdose?

If you have taken an overdose of Eucreas, you should consult your doctor.

Eucreas interactions

Some drugs are known to interact with Eucreas when used in tandem with it. Therefore, it is important that before being prescribed with this medicine, you inform your doctor about all prescription and non prescription drugs that you are taking. You should also tell him about herbal medicines, vitamin and mineral supplements that you may be using.

Do not start taking any new medicine, without consulting your doctor.

Eucreas side effects

Some common side effects from Eucreas are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach ache and appetite loss. There may be other side effects of Eucreas, consult your doctor if you experience any unusual symptoms after taking this medicine. These might be some major side effects of the medicine that need to be reported to the doctor immediately.
