What is Diovan?
Diovan (valsartan) belongs to a family of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonist. It is a nonpeptide, orally active antagonist that acts on the AT1 receptor subtype.
What is Diovan used for?
Diovan is indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart failure (NYHA class II-IV) in patients who are intolerant of angeotensin converting enzyme inhibitors.
How does Diovan work?
Diovan works by blocking angiotensin II receptors. This decreases the effectiveness of angiotensin II, which causes blood vessels to narrow.
Diovan keeps blood vessels from narrowing. Thus, it reduces blood pressure and improves blood flow.
How to use Diovan
Diovan should be taken in the manner prescribed by the doctor. Taking it for longer periods or in larger amounts than recommended can cause health problems.
The drug can be taken with or without food. Get your blood tested on a regular basis while using Diovan.
Diovan warnings and precautions
Do not use this drug if you are allergic to valsartan. Avoid drinking alcohol and do not take potassium supplements or salt substitutes, while taking Diovan.
Prior to taking the medication, tell your doctor if you have congestive heart failure, kidney or liver disease, or if you are dehydrated.
Avoid getting up too fast from lying or sitting position (to prevent a fall).
Pregnant and lactating women should not use this drug without consulting their doctors.
What do I do if I have missed a Diovan dose?
If you have missed your Diovan dose you can take the missed dose as soon as you remember but do not take it if it is time for your next dose.
What do I do if I have taken a Diovan overdose?
If you have taken a Diovan overdose you should seek immediate medical attention.
