What is Deramaxx?

Deramaxx is a medication prescribed by veterinarians which provides relief from arthritis and other joint pain. Deramaxx is a NSAID, a non-narcotic, non-steroridal, anti-inflammatory drug, which belongs to the coxib class of drugs. This medication is used to control pain and inflammation which can result from orthopedic surgery and osteoarthritis. Unlike many other coxib drugs, Deramaxx works by blocking the COX-2 enzyme only, which is the enzyme responsible for triggering inflammation at the joint level. The COX-1 enzyme, which is used to control many necessary body functions is not inhibited. Deramaxx is not only useful for reducing pain and inflammation associated with orthopedic surgery and osteoarthritis, but has also been used successfully after dental surgery and in the treatment of bladder cancer in dogs. While it will not cure arthritis and inflammation, it will reduce pain, giving dogs the ability to enjoy an active, healthy lifestyle. With proper usage, Deramaxx for dogs can aid a dog suffering from osteoarthritis and other joint or dental pain. Proper dosage and monitoring by a qualified veterinarian can enable a dog to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle, free from joint pain and discomfort.

How to use Deramaxx

Deramaxx for dogs is available as a beef-flavored tablet, which can be easily scored and cut. The flavor and softness of the chew enables it to be easily fed to dogs. Deramaxx for dogs may upset a dogs stomach so it is advised that it be administered with food. The tablets are available in dosages of 25mg, 75mg, and 100mg. For dogs suffering from osteoarthritis, who must take the drug daily, it is recommended that the lower dosage be used.

Deramaxx warnings and precautions

Deramaxx for dogs is only recommended for dogs weighing above 4 pounds, as difficulty in dosing arises in smaller dogs. Deramaxx is for the treatment of dogs, and should never be given to cats or any other animal. Dogs who are sensitive to aspirin and other NSAIDS such as carprofen, including Rimadyl and Novox, firocoxib such as Previcox, meloxicam or Metacam, or tepoxalin such as Zubrin should not take Deramaxx. Dogs on this medication will need regular check-ups and lab word as prescribed by their veterinarian.

What do I do if I have missed a Deramaxx dose?

If a dose of Deramaxx for dogs is missed, then a dosage should be given immediately. However, if it is time for the next dosage, do not give the missed dose of Deramaxx for dogs. Two doses of the medication should never be given at once. Warning signs of an accidental overdose in dogs include bloody or tarry stools, vomiting, diarrhea, incoordination, seizures, behavioral changes, increased thirst and increased urination, yellowing of the eyes, skin, and gums. If an overdose is suspected, a veterinarian should be immediately contacted.

Deramaxx interactions

Owners who have dogs currently on NSAIDs, sulfa drugs, oral antidiabetics, oral anticoagulants, digoxin or phenobarbital, should let their veterinarians know of these drugs, as drug interactions may occur. These interactions may not only cause one or more of the medications to not work, but may also endanger the life of the dog.

Deramaxx side effects

The most common Deramaxx side effects are the upset stomaches that can result from the taking of any NSAID. Other Deramaxx side effects can include loss of appetite, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, and in extreme cases, gastric ulcers. Deramaxx side effects in the liver include jaundice, or yellowing of the eyes, gums, and skin. Side effects in the kidneys can include increased urination or changes in urine smell or color. Other Deramaxx side effects can include behavioral changes in the dog, lethargy, shedding, and seizures. If any of these side effects are noted, doses of Deramaxx should be stopped and a veterinarian should be contacted immediately.
